I wonder if anyone has any advice. Our district has hired a consultant to assist with revamping our RtI program. Her entire focus is upon using only AIMSweb to identify students requiring intervention. Therefore, we are having students who are careful readers falling into Tier 2 when teachers know they are not in need of intervention. In addition, we have students who are accurate word callers, but have absolutely no clue about what they've read. The consultant has told us that we should only be servicing students with decoding issues. She specifically stated that "comprehension results from reading, but is not reading." Her rationale is that comprehension can be affected by a number of issues and unless one is able to determine exactly why a student has poor comprehension, such as a lack of background knowledge, there should be no intervention provided. I am not in agreement, however I could use some help in coming up with ideas to address this with her. Any help, advice, or research ...See More
Mark Pennington So sorry that your teachers and students have to put up with this poor advice. See the link for a number of RtI articles and resources to bolster your case
