Adult Literacy

Hello, I would like to volunteer at my local Literacy Center however I have no experience or training in teaching reading to adults. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I would even begin? The population I would be tutoring are illiterate...would I begin with sight words? Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat books? I'm stumped but would really like to try to help these people. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

You adult literacy center should be able to provide training and information for you. The reality is, not all illiterate adult needs the same thing. For example, we have a high population of ESOL adults that are illiterate in English. Some have university degrees in their native country but whose limited English skills are only spoken language skills. We have the ESOL adult that was never literate in their own native language due to lack of instruction and those that quit school because they couldn't learn well.

We have native English speaking adults that are illiterate often times because of undiagnosed learning disabilities OR lack of instruction in a primarily low performing school where students were housed instead of educated.

I say, talk to your literacy center for a start. Ask what is required for a volunteer and if they have volunteer training. Our literacy center has an assessor that does an interview and an assessment with each potential student. In my eyes, it is not nearly sufficient for some, but it at least helps identify the category the student falls in. Then they have several different reading programs they use to tutor the student. For those that seem to have underlying disabilities, Wilson can be used for a start. For other language learners that have some basic English reading skills programs such as The Challenger Series is used. They do have others though.

Again, talk to your literacy center. More than likely they will train you and provide a student that matches your schedule and you tutoring ability level.
