Hello all, I just started a new job as a remedial reading teacher in a junior high (middle school). I have experience with primary grades but not with older kids. Does anyone have any suggestions for books to use with them? Also, any suggestions about anything at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
N Kellick Jamestown Education: Critical Reading series, The Wild Side, The Outer Edge. All short non-fiction stories. Also, we use the Language! curriculum by Sopris West.

jb Read the book "I Read It, But I Don't Get It" by Chris Tovani for some insight into teaching older students to read, engage and be critical.

Also, the SQ3R method is old and very simple, but try teaching them this. You can use this method with Hi/Lo materials and it will help them with the comprehension side of reading, especially for non-...See More

Anita Have the student choose text that is approximately reading level and is interesting. Then help the student learn to decode, recognise, and comprehend any unfamiliar words. Use universal word, explicit teaching, concrete, multi-sensory, applied phonics, reading/language arts/English intervention.
