Below is a sample annual goal I came up with. Can someone please critique this and give me some feedback ?
The area of study is social studies
The student is in middle school
The student is Learning Disabled.
The student has language problems
Technology will be addressed in the IEP
Through software programs like iMovie or MovieMaker, in combination with the internet, digital cameras, digital video cameras, and scanners, JOHN will create an 8- to 10- minute narrated slide show presentation of the causes and milestones of the American Civil War with 90% correct grammar usage and chronological/sequential accuracy by May 2010.
I'm not quite sure what your actual goal is... grammar or American Civil War knowledge
Is the movie your idea or his needs becuase he can't do oral or written presentations? Is is just the chronology you want accurate or the causes too or just the grammar? Is he doing this independently? By that I mean really independently - no one helping him write the script. If not, then this goal won't show his knowledge, just what he can do when someone helps him do it.
Will you produce sub goals since this is so broad?
Aside from the goal itself, what type of specially designed instruction is going to be provided to teach the grammar skills - both verbal and written? What specially designed instruction is going to be utilized to teach him the history content? Since you didn't provide the present level of performance for this goal and his strengths and weaknesses which I'm sure you do have written in the goal, I'm scratching my head wondering how this is any different than just a regular assignment. Also it seems a bit subjective although you have a percentage. Percentages don't always make a goal measurable.
I would sit down and try to better define what skills he needs to learn in social studies in order to master and show content knowledge. Then figure out the goals a bit more and who is responsible for teaching the underlying skills because I see a long list of necessary skills to be in place in order for him to complete a goal like this.
Now, that said, most districts want generic goals as possible, but that isn't what students need.
Are you trying to accommodate his language problems? If so, why is he narrating the slide show? I guess I'm wondering - how is this activity any different from his classmates? How does this activity respect John's learning disability (ies) and his language problems?
Is your school well supplied with digital cameras and digital video cameras? Powerpoint might be simpler but that point is not my main one.
It remains to be said how this activity addresses John's needs? We modify and accommodate for LD kids - I'm just not seeing how this activity does either of those?
