Information about the use of Smartboards

I am currently a college student in the field of communication sciences and disorders. I would love to gain more knowledge about integrating technology into the classroom and also the into clinical settings. I am aware that Smartboards are a popular tool used by hundreds of teachers nationwide. I have not had much experience with them and am not comfortable using one. I would love to know how effective Smartboards are in terms of teaching young children? Do they serve as a valuable interactive resource in the classroom? Are Smartboards easy to use and can elementary aged children benefit from them in a "hands-on" manner? Also, what types of subject materials do teachers use Smartboards for most often?
