What to do while waiting for student teaching assignments?

Hi everyone -

I'm about to start my student teaching assignment this fall (only waiting for my university to assign me to a master teacher). I'm getting my credential in Secondary Math, in California. I've already got my clearance to qualify for student teaching (passed my Algebra/Geometry/Calculus CSET exams, and the first 2 Teacher Performance Assessments (TPAs) that California requires. What I'm wondering... my school provides a student teaching orientation about a month before school starts, but I want to know why the extra month lead time - what all do student teachers need to do prior to class starting?

You obviously don't know the exact subject you'll be teaching (Algebra, Geometry, etc.), but all math classes have common themes:

1. What tyes of activities will you be doing with the students? 2. Do you anticipate doing a lot of group work? 3. How will you integrate technology (graphing calculators/power point) into your lessons? 4. How much inquiry (self-discovery) do you want the students to do, and how much do you want to directly teach?

Then you also need to think of classroom management/discipline: 1. What types of rules/procedures are you going to use? Keep in mind you'll need to integrate your rules with what the Master Teacher already has in place. 2. What will the general flow of each class be? (Bellringer, new lesson, homework review, wrap-up, etc.) 3. If you will be using materials (calculators, manipulatives), do you have those? Find out if the school can provide those for you before you begin student teaching. What procedures will you use to distribute/collect materials? 4. Have you thought about how you are goig to teach/model the rules and procedures? 5. What sorts of introductory games/ice breaker activites are you planning on using?

You won't know too much until you meet your Master Teacher and both of you discuss in detail what you will be teaching. But, there are plenty of items that need to be attended to before you begin student teaching. The lists above give a brief overview of what you can do or think about to prepare.

Science Teacher If your state has a graduation exam, head to their online site to check out the practice problems. Our math department uses those for daily bell work, and they usually have interesting ways of presenting the materials which will give you good ideas on how to present your own material.

I like this idea. I've been thinking for a while for the types of problems I'd like to see as bellwork, and I think this may be a great idea. California does have the CAHSEE exit exam, so this will be a great idea.

I love the TI website. I have both a TI-83 and a TI-84, and am quite familiar with them. And with youtube videos, one of my classmates did that with her powerpoints and was telling us how to embed them. I've found some tools myself that I can use with powerpoint - one of my classes required I teach a math lesson, which my lesson included a "quiz" - played in teams - which provided randomized slides so even I didn't know what the next slide was in the given "quiz" range. > Practice actually explaining math concepts out loud. This actually isn't my first experience "teaching" math - I've been a math tutor for the past six years, and part of that time I actually taught my cousin's home school geometry class. I've also done some group tutoring, but have had no more than five at a time. The area I'm most concerned about, but have been reading up on (including Harry Wong's book and several others), is classroom management. I don't have a problem with explaining the concepts... Just want to keep the classroom under control.

katie p. When you go to orientation will you be assigned your master teacher? If not, I probably won't be much help. If you will make sure you contact them right away. Show the extra initiative and ask to come in and shadow the work they're doing before school starts. Ask them if there is anything you can do to help. I am in college now. If everything goes as planned, I will graduate in May 2013. Right now, I work as an Administrative Secretary. I plan to look for another position soon. What do you suggest I do to get my foot into the field of teaching now?
