I am a student teacher in Upstate New York and today I observed a student come into class today without a warm winter jacket. It was 21 degrees when I left my house today and there have been flurries all day. After discussing the subject with my host teacher I was left wondering what the best protocol is for obtaining a jacket for this student.

In my education courses we have discussed creating comfortable environments for our students and I was wondering if this does not fall into this category. Should we as teachers take on the responsibility of ensuring that our students are properly dressed to come to school? What if they cannot afford a decent jacket?

Any advice on this subject is greatly appreciated.
Jennifer At our school we would offer a spare jacket to wear for the day, if we had one. Or, call the parents to discuss the issue and keep the student inside during recess.
