Anyone with advise for an older yet relatively new teacher looking for an elementary teaching job in Connecticut? I have some experience with my own classroom but have been subbing for past few years. What can I do to better my chances in getting my own classroom again?

Jenn Find some way to stand out from the crowd - get training in technology through some of the RESC workshops (I know Eastconn offers tons of tech workshops), be familiar with the SDE requirements for SRBI, the new LD guidelines, the early childhood guidelines, etc. Read up on different reading and math programs that are popular in the state and do you...See MoreFind some way to stand out from the crowd - get training in technology through some of the RESC workshops (I know Eastconn offers tons of tech workshops), be familiar with the SDE requirements for SRBI, the new LD guidelines, the early childhood guidelines, etc. Read up on different reading and math programs that are popular in the state and do your best to be familiar with them, so when you're faced with interview questions you have something else to say besides "no, I've never used it but I'm a fast learner!" Be familiar with the CMT requirements and the types of questions, and have thought through and perhaps even written a few lesson plans on how you would implement say math strand 25 in the classroom (that's the big problem solving one that is difficult for many students to pass).

With the amount of elementary applications for each opening, in order to get the job you need to stand out from the crowd in a major way. Look at what your own strength and weaknesses are as well as what subjects you personally enjoy, and go from there. Most applicants are fresh from college and can discuss theory but have never implemented in, thus the saying above. If you can give them more than that: "Here are some Smartboard lessons I've developed to address strand ___ on the CMT; would you care you look at them?" that will make you stand out from all the rest of the applicants. If there are schools and teachers you have particularly enjoyed subbing for, maybe on days when you're not subbing you can ask to shadow one of those teachers and talk with them about what they and their administrators look for in their applicants. If you spend a lot of time in one particular school it's worth at least asking if you can sit in on some of their professional development as a way to learn new information.
