So, I teacher for Atlanta Public Schools and the staff at my elementary school has been told that we must remove all mini-refrigerators, microwaves, and toaster ovens from classrooms. Our vice principal even walked through the building this morning to make sure they were all gone. Supposedly, the system is trying to save money on electricity. Most teachers at my school had refrigerators in their classrooms and I'm sure it's similar in other schools, so yes, this may have raised the system's electric bill. But, seriously, I wonder by how much.

This may seem small to some but to me it is just one more knock that lowers teacher morale. The fridge in the staff lounge stays dirty from lazy people who don't clean up after themselves as does the microwave oven. It's been really nice over the years to be able to keep lunch items and snacks for kids in our classroom fridges. retired Oh, my. Yes, these things you mention can really raise the system's electric bill. How many rooms like yours with refrigerators, etc. are there in APS? Electricity waste got so bad in our system that the county hired an Energy Nazi guy (a retired principal) to wander through the schools after hours and on the weekend to turn off stuff left on and l...See More

DeKalb Teach They started doing that in DeKalb around 2005. They claimed it was due to the fire marshal. Interesting bit of information about the electricity. We were also told we could not put anything on the hall walls or doors - because of the fire marshal.
