CPS union dues

I have never officially filled out the form/agreed to be a member of the Chicago Teachers Union. However, money has been taken out of every paycheck, deduction labeled "CTU FSHR". I know this is going to the union, but if I am not a member, why am I paying? I assume since I am paying regardless, I may as well become a member. I am a cadre sub not a regular teacher. Just wanted to see if anyone can explain this to me. Thanks!

Laura My son had an AP social studies teacher in Florida who was always badmouthing unions. It irritated me because he benefited from the union contract, even though Florida has much, much weaker labor protection than Illinois. It irritated me because he benefited from the union contract, even though Florida has much, much weaker labor protection than Illinois. Some states, like South Carolina, do not allow teachers to unionize, yet they have some of the worst schools in the country (according to realtor org Neighborhood Scout). Join the CTU, not just because youre paying anyways, but because there is power in unity. The CORE caucus staffed our union with some very dedicated teachers.
