Illinois is a "right to work" state, but does that mean >public schools teachers can opt out of the union?

IF Illinois was a RTW state, then it would mean that. BUT, Illinois is thankfully NOT a Right to Work state. In fact, Illinois has some of the strongest pro-union laws in the country, and that is the main reason why it is a decent place to teach, if you can find a job.

> In other >words, is union membership compulsory in Illinois?

Well, here is where it gets sticky. Union membership is not compulsory for teachers. However, you must pay your "fair share," which means you will pay full union dues. If you don't join the union, then you still pay exactly what a member does, but you don't get the liability insurance or representation with administrators, or any other benefits. In short, it makes no sense to not join.
