Hi folks! I am dual certified in special education and elementary education and have just submitted an application for several teaching positions with Chicago public schools. I do not currently live in that area, but did a few years ago and am anxious to relocate there. If anyone knows about the market there and has some tips, I would appreciate it. Looking primarily on the North side as that's the area I'm most familiar with and the public transit is generally better.

What do you mean by "market?" Job market? Housing Market?

North side elementary schools are usually harder to get into because quite frankly they're better (for CPS, anyway). Teachers like to stay there. South and west side schools usually have the most need.

That said, there's nothing to say you can't get a job there. This is a year of lay-offs and cutbacks, but you never know... CPS has a residency requirement but special ed jobs still qualify for an exemption.

I worked for CPS for one year many years ago. It is very bureaucratic and obviously the kids can be a challenge. For me in the mid-90s, it seemed like I was taking a step back in time, to about the early-80s. They seem to be a decade and a half behind on... just about everything: materials, teaching strategies, technology, and so on.

So, they should be around 1998 or so now. Brush up on your Better than Ezra music and Friends trivia ;) Some schools even have websites now, and dial-up internet access, but many don't.

Joking aside (I'm not joking about the dial-up and websites though), it might benefit you to go "old-school" on the job search. You probably applied on-line. There really are administrators in CPS who don't know how to use a computer, so you might benefit from mailing a resume and cover letter directly to the administrator at the school you applied to. You may be surprised how quickly that moves you to the top of the list. As we get closer to the school year starting, they may want a body in the classroom and boom, your name is right in front of them.
