I am a student working towards my elementary education degree. I have heard it is very hard to get a job at the Blue Valley, Olathe, and Shawnee Mission school districts. Can anyone give me some advice as to what I can do during my schooling that will make my application look appealing to those districts. Thank you for your help. By the way, I am not a traditional student - I am forty years old and getting certified in elementary education at Ottawa University at Corporate Woods.
Have you been keeping up with the KS BOE races? Well, I'm sad to say that there is a VERY real possibility that we will have a deadlock group again! How sad.
Sonny is working on a write in campaign, but that rarely works. I read about that one and I can't believe he didn't win the primary. He should have. He has been an advocate for children so long.
Anyway, if any of you have some political clout...get out there and help stop the possibility deadlock group. Do you want to be fighting over science standards again?????
I've discovered some GREAT reading material to help my 2nd graders. As you know your Basal will not teach kids who are struggling to read. These materials will! I'm so excited I finally have materials to actually teach reading!!

As a former Kansas teacher of 17 years, I enjoy seeing what Kansas teachers are doing. I've now taught in Georgia for 5 years--the last 3 as the Early Intervention Program (EIP) teacher for 1st thru 3rd. My students are struggling to stay at grade level in reading. I've been using the site you shared for over a year now. It is wonderful (and a cheap source of new reading material)! The stories work well with the 4-Blocks Literacy program which my district is becoming immersed in.
I have a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from the University of Southern Colorado. I am interested in teaching H.S. I live in South East Kansas. What do I need to do to get a job as a teacher? Do I have to get a second degree in teaching? If you could give me as much information as possible, that would be great.
I have a B.S. degree from THe Ohio State University in Recreation Education. I am interested in either teaching Physical Education or teaching elementary students any subject. WHat do I need to do to get my teaching certificate or do I need to just go back and get another undergraduate degree?
You would probably need to have additional teaching classes such as teacher's certification classes before you begin to teach. After the certification classes you would then have to take that States test(s) to be approved as a teacher.
Take care, Andrea C.

I need some advice about schools in Johnson County. I am considering changing schools and wondered if anyone from JC would write in and give me your summary opinion of the school in which you work. Would you advise a person to seek a job there? Why or why not? I am okay in the school where I am but I think it just may be time for a change.
Gypsy - For the most part, I would highly recommend Johnson County schools. The district in Johnson County that I have the highest respect for is Olathe, and the district that I believe you should stay away from is Blue Valley. First of all, I am a former student who grew up in Blue Valley. Also, I am about to graduate this semester with a degree in secondary education/social studies. Next semester, I will pursue a masters degree in behavior disorders. Within the next year, I will be applying for temporary certification as a behavior disorder teacher in Olathe as I continue to work on my masters. Without bias, I can tell you upfront that Blue Valley is the most parent run - parent operated school district I have ever seen and/or heard of. The district completely revolves around politics, not TEACHING. With all due respect to you, if this is your thing, then go for it. If you would rather see your child in a Johnson County school district that heavily involves commitment to parent "involvement," meeting the needs of all types of students (sped & the norm alike), and is TRULY dedicated to TEACHING, then Olathe is your district.
I went to Shawnee Mission South school, it is the best high school in the district, Shawnee Mission East is also good, SM West and SM North areb't that great as I've heard in terms of discipline. Hello. I am an inspirational author and speaker who recently published his memoir. It is spiced with blunt honesty and biting humor. My story in a nutshell:
Although I had to overcome years of countless and extreme adversities, I still have great zest for life. Before we were twenty years old, my brother and I endured war, killer illnesses, starvation, homelessness, floggings, abandonment, exile and slavery. But by the time we were thirty-some years old, something had seriously gone wrong with us. We had stubbornly worked our ways through college, married, and had become American citizens and world travelers.

Dear Friends: I am thinking to go back to Kansas because I lived over there for a long time. I am holding a licence from Alabama, Secondary Science, but I do not know what test I have to take in order to teach students in Kansas. Can I get a temporary license for a year to teach and them I can take the test? Please somebody let me know. Thank you.
