Is there a need for English Teachers in Kansas

I am from Northwest Ohio and there is too many teachers, but not enough openings. I have excellent references and satisfactory evaluations from administrators. Also, I have one year teaching experience in another state.

Are the school districts smaller, meaning that most counties have more than one school district in their county? Here in Henry County, Ohio, we have four school districts. Is being employed as an English Teacher competitive in Kansas as it is in Ohio? I am thinking about teaching in Kansas, if it is possible.

Yes, the school districts here are grouped more around cities and towns than counties. I teach in the Wichita district, which has over 50,000 students, but Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. I also worked in much smaller districts that had only a few thousand students, and some districts in south east Kansas and western Kansas only have a few hundred.

As far as a demand for Enlgish....not really. There are jobs open in English, but you really need to stand out to get them. We had 3 openings in English at our school and there were over a hundred applicants to choose from. Usually they go to teachers who are also willing to fill a coaching position, are certified in other areas that we might need, or belong to a minority group to help make our faculty more diverse. Also, to be honest, they look for people who already have a Kansas license so they won't have extra hoops to jump through to get that person certified. If you haven't checked into getting a Kansas license I would get to the KS Dept. of Education website ASAP and see what you need to do.Another thought-right now in Kansas as long as you are certified in something, you can take the PRAXIS test for any other content area(except elementary ed, early childhood, SPED, or Gifted), and if you get a passing score you will be eligible to be certified in that content area....an area that you might consider would be ESOL, the demand for that field is pretty high right now in KS. Even if you aren't teaching ESOL, but are teaching regular Language Arts classes, if you have ESOL- identified students in your class, the school gets federal $$ for you. That is something a lot of principals in my district are looking for right now in their hiring processes.

I am not sure what kind of time table you are looking at. We report back to our buildings here in less than a month. Most schools in Kansas will be starting mid-August. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Kay What a thoughtful helpful post. And, I don't know how you were so kind that you didn't even comment on the English grammar error in the first sentence of the original post. I just can't imagine that an English teacher would have made that error. Oh, well, guess no one's perfect.
