Need advice...

Hi there fellow teachers, I am considering making a career switch due to the job situtation here in Metro Detroit. I won't give details, but we all know what it's like. I've worked at a charter for a couple years and just don't think teaching is what I'm cut out for. Has anyone made the jump from teaching to a medical field? I'm thinking of going back to get my associates to be a dental hygienist. I realize I could meet with a counselor to get the details worked out, but I'm curious to see how others with a teaching background have made a jump like that. Was it difficult? Are there jobs available for medical people, let alone dental hygienists? Has anyone made the jump and regretted their decision? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks fellow teachers!

MAY I have left teaching. I am working in the non-profit field. I miss the kids, but what I', doing now is not less important. I am still making a change in the world...just in a different way.

NC teacher Talk to dentists and their hygienists. I'm in the Charlotte area and my dental hygienist tells me there is a glut of them right now. Don't know about your area. Make sure you talk to the actual professionals, not the schools that train them.

CJC I went from nursing to teaching and have to say teaching is so much harder. Yes, summers and weekends off are great but I made more money as a nurse and there is not the negative backlash that teachers get all the time. I am thinking of going back to nursing.

It took her a while to get through the program and she was abou...See MoreA few years ago (early 2008) I was getting a teeth cleaning done at a community college through their dental education program. I was discussing my job situation with the hygienist working on me (how once I graduated there were no jobs) and she said the same thing was happening to her. It took her a while to get through the program and she was about to graduate and now the same thing was happening with dental hygienist jobs - there were not a lot of jobs and lot of candidates competing for them. Now, this is just what one person told me, and things might have changed in the past few years, although I would assume the job situation would have gotten worse as our economy got worse. But I would definitely do a lot of research before starting the program...

I also went to an info session for the nursing program at GVSU last summer, and was told that even though there is still a nursing shortage, the job situation is getting harder in that area, as hospitals are cutting budgets and not hiring like they used to. Though I'm sure there is still more hope for nurses than teachers, its worth doing thorough research before starting any program.
