I'm about to complete my student teaching and M.Ed. in Maryland. I will be certified in pre-K to 12 ESL, but I will only teach elementary or middle, especially PK-2. I also have a bachelor's in linguistics. I've taken the Praxis and edTPA.
My current plan is to apply for a NJ CEAS this fall, teach in Maryland for a year, and then start job hunting in New Jersey for 2018-2019. I'm wondering how hard it is for an out-of-state candidate, with an M.Ed. and a year of paid teaching experience, to get a job teaching ESL. My understanding is that ESL has a teacher shortage, but I've looked on dozens of school district websites and none of them have openings as of now. I hear New Jersey is very competitive and I know they may turn up their noses at someone from another state without tenure. I also know many ESL programs in NJ are bilingual, which I cannot offer. Any tips or timeline? What would make it easier for me? How do I get my name out there?
To summarize:
What I Want
• Full-time ESL teaching job in NJ
• Elementary (strongly preferred) or middle
• Hudson/Bergen/Essex/Union/Middlesex County
What I Will Have
• M.Ed. Curriculum & Instruction from University of Maryland
• A year of teaching experience in Maryland
• NJ CEAS
• B.A. Linguistics
• Great edTPA and Praxis TESOL scores
• Some Spanish, if that matters
Will anyone want to hire me? How competitive am I? How can I make myself more attractive to school districts as an out-of-state candidate? Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated!

I ...See MoreI just received my CEAS to teach high school social studies and my CE in middle school social studies.
I seem to be getting conflicting information regarding teaching 7-8th grade social studies. Do I need to have a separate k-8 certification in order to seek employment in a middle school? Or is the subject matter cert enough?
I know I can apply for high school jobs, but not sure about middle school.

What a...See MoreAre there verified, as in you know or the school says, online options that NJ DOE accepts?
I know that Rutgers GSE has an online, but as far as I can figure it costs $3000 for a 3 credit class? Being as there are 21 credits needed for the NJ Special Ed cert cost is my main concern. I think Rowan and NJCU has an online also.
What about Phoenix and/or others that may possibly be cheaper.
Rutgers isn't that much. It's $687 per credit plus about $200 in other fees. Rowan is partially online but should be completely online in the spring if I read their info correctly.
The NJDOE will send you a list of NJ schools that have the necessary courses. Montclair required 27 credits for the cert. I'm going to Rutgers. Once the 21 credits are completed for the TOSD cert, one would need an additional five classes for a master's in special ed. The NJDOE is pushing NJ colleges unless you already have a full degree in special ed. I already have a masters in education and two of the classes are similar to the required courses at Rutgers and they won't accept transfer credits for the cert.
If you are teaching, the district might pay for part of the tuition.
I have a job interview for a middle school math position and I have not been on an interview in 4 years. I was wondering if someone might be able to share some recent interview questions that was asked during an interview? Are you expected to bring a portfolio if you have over tens years of experience?
