Hamilton County (Chattanooga) is always looking for special ed! ANd the good thing is that since the city is linked to Interstate 75 and Interstate 24, you can live a ways w/o being too inconvenienced w/ distance.
SHe needs to start NOW with getting her info to the state of TN (praxis scores, license, etc) b/c it takes like a month or so for them to register it. Also, she needs to go ahead and get the application started in the counties of interest b/c the spring is when principals start hiring for the fall and the teachers (in Hamilton County atleast) are bidding out to other schools, retiring, etc....

From what I remember studying for my masters (in admin) and personal experience of friends in similar experience, your teaching on an alternative license does not count for experience towards tenureship nor pay step increases. (at least here in Hamilton county)
Curious, why were you on alternative license but then went to apprentice? Were you in a program to get your teaching license? Were you waiting for your praxis scores to increase?
The state education website can provide specifics if you look at it for teacher observation and what not. I found it once when having to research it for one of the classes I was taking
Thanks for the reply, Jaime! I started on the alternative license because I started a graduate teacher licensure program the same year I began teaching. I advanced to the apprentice license upon completion of the TEP.
I'll continue to research these particulars; early digging on the internet was slow and didn't yield much information, so I though I'd post here. Again, thanks for the reply!
I am sure that adding an AFS student to your schools would assist your students with learning a new culture and language. Naturally, encouraging them to go on an AFS exchange is even better. Contact [link removed].
I am living in Chicago and thinking about moving to Nashville. Was wondering if there are any teaching jobs available? How is the market down there? I am IL certified K-9, middle school LA and Science endorsed. I am open to different types of positions w/in education (ie: substitute, support staff, tutoring, etc.) Thanks!
If your certified you should be fine. Try to get in Middle school that is your best bet. For the rest of us trying to get hired on an altenate license -almost impossible.
google nashville and teaching and see what pops up. There's lots going on, even a grant to get a degree from Vanderbilt while teaching in the inner city.
I'm assuming that Nashville is like the rest of TN cities (I live in Chattanooga) and it's pretty segregated (self imposed) with a few areas that are more culturally diverse. Just take a weekend or 3 to check out the different areas before making up your mind since you're about 8hrs away.
There are good places and bed places to live around there and TONS of traffic for a small town in comparison to Chicago. My sister lives in a small town about 1/2 hr from there for college and going to Nashville is a hassle that they don't do alot unless for concerts or what not.
Good luck and consider middle school, science especially since that's ALWAYS the shortage area around the state
If you know of 18+ young adults who love to ride horses send this to them. This would be a great program for them this summer in Australia. Our local web site is [link removed].

This is only one of our AFS-USA programs that students who are 18+ may apply. Another is on an archeology dig in Tunisia. The local contact is Becky Heywood at [email removed].
Keep in mind that AFS-USA has many other programs for the summer for younger students where there are still openings and for semester, gap and year-long as well. You may view them on the [link removed]
