How Desperate is Memphis City Schools

Cause I'm very desperate. I'm in South Carolina now. If hired would MCS give me a pay advance to relocate?

Just in case you posted in earnest and are not joking, here is the low down:

Schools are never desperate to hire teachers. They can legally hire almost any warm body. You never heard of an emergency or conditional certificate? Every state I know of gives these to school districts. It allows them to hire basically anybody with a bachelor's degree and no other qualifications.

Baltimore City Schools was shipping hundreds of Filipinos over and hiring them using conditional certificates. And, no, they did not pay them to relocate. Many (maybe all?) of them taught for significant periods of time (one year to several years) without even passing the teacher tests that are supposed to ensure they are at least minimally subject matter qualified. An American can't even get an interview in the district without having full certification, excepting cases of nepotism and cronyism of course.

Don't tell me you have bought into all of the "highly qualified teacher" propaganda? Hello, that is just government propaganda to make the public think that schools and the government are doing their utmost to give students excellent teachers. But it is only propaganda. In practice, urban schools pretty much do what they want. They hire legally "unqualified" individuals for a variety of reasons--nepotism, cronyism, social "equity" agendas, affirmative action agendas, save-money-by-hiring-newbies-all-the-time agendas, etcetera.

No, they are not going to give you a pay advance, relocation, or even a stick of bubble gum to get you to come work for them. You'll be lucky to even get a job working for them on their terms (definitely not yours).

Note that Memphis Unified was hiring Filipino teachers according to this source. School districts always claim that they do this because they can't find any American teachers, but after over two years of researching that claim, I have found it to be a complete fabrication. American teachers are available, but the foreign teachers are cheap and easy to control. They are indentured servants as a judge who ruled on a case involving foreign teachers versus a school district called them.

Also, urban school districts almost all hire large numbers of Teach for America interns and other types of interns. In other words, cheap, temporary labor that is easy to control.

You can apply. But keep in mind that they won't be desperate. They won't be grateful that you are applying. If you get hired, they won't be respectful to you either. And they won't care if you stay. Large urban school districts have the attitude that they are doing YOU the favor by hiring you. They won't care if you stay either because there are 100 stooges lined up behind you to take the job.

If you do get hired, keep your head low. The guy with his head sticking out of the fox hole is the one who gets it shot off. Heros have short life expectancies. Try to be a ghost. The less you are noticed by the administration at the school, the better. Don't send referrals to the office or counselors. Handle your behavior problems yourself--the admin won't support you anyway. If you don't know how to manage behavior in an urban class yourself, the kids are going to eat you alive. You'll be swimming in a shark tank with no safety cage. Just you and 20-45 sharks for 10 months. Most people don't make it to month 10.

Inflate your grades. You will be expected to give the students grades they have not earned--in other words mainly A's, B's, and C's. Yes, I know... It will seem weird to give passing grades to some kids who have across the board zeros on their homework assignments and F's on all their tests. Regardless, if you don't pass them, you'll be sh*t- canned. That is the way it works. It is because the school is being graded by the federal government on how many students graduate and how long it took them to graduate so school admin want the kids pushed through not held back no matter how academically deficient or how lazy or how disruptive they are. If you as the teacher won't play ball, the admin will gut you. Got it?

If you went to a decent school, then you will be shocked that the best students you have would be no better than C or D students at the schools you attended. Doesn't matter, they get A's. Lots and lots of A's. That keeps the community happy. It fools all the parents into thinking their child is doing well academically. It is a disguise for what is really happening at those schools, which is, of course, academic failure across the board.

I was offered a job that outside of my expertise, I told them I would need support and I was told by the principal that not only would I get the added support but three mentors and boiler plates to get me through the first few weeks as she wanted me in her building. Upon arriving, no boiler plates, no mentor. Let me take that back, yes a mentor who was just relocated and just as clueless as I. A complete 180 by the principal who informed me that this was the job I accepted and that I better step up. For the most part, she was right on that. I did accept that job and as a professional... regardless of what took place in our previous conversations. I too was told that we needed to give the students 100s regardless if they even did the work. Now I ask, how stupid do we think our students are? They know if they did something or not and see a 100% on their progress reports for work that they know they didn't do sends a very strong and fast message that they don't need to do a thing.
