This morning when I did my 10000 steps at the park the outside temperature was 4 !!! I don't know what the wind chill was, but it was cold. Fortunately I was dressed for the frigid temps and did just fine. We then did our biweekly trip to Costco plus the mall where I attended a workshop at the Apple Store. I got my first iPhone yesterday and needed some tips since I've switched from a Samsung Galaxy. Anyway my total steps for the day are over 13000....a good total for me.
The cold temps are supposed to continue for the next couple of days.....looking forward to next weeks trip to Florida to walk in warm temps again!
I've been faltering on using my pedometer, but I did my 90 minutes today, so I know I got my steps in. Lots of tiny jobs around here and several errands. Routine day, I guess.
School started back today for the grandkids so the first grader and I bundled up and did our mile walk to school, We left a few minutes early since freshly fallen snow always is too much fun to just walk and not stop and play in, too. I also got some outside time before school kicking balls across the snow for the dog to chase. She loves snow - it's in her breed's nature. It was around 15 degrees, but little wind so very tolerable.
Glad to read I might have inspired someone to try spinning! My instructor said just this morning that she was a member of this gym for 3 years before trying the bikes. She said they looked too intimidating. Now she says she is an addict to spinning. Even one of her kids is an instructor for spinning now.
Ron, electric shocks from headphones is a new one to me. Weird.
I walked at the gym for 30 minutes and at the library for 50 minutes today. The library has a 2-month program of biweekly walks through the stacks. Kind of cool, and gets a person looking for possible books. And, in our small town, of course, I know most of the walkers.
Darn, I forgot my pedometer today, but I'm thinking I'm on target.
I am trying so hard to learn housespeak. Every time something breaks, so do I. The old microwave gave up the ghost (fortunately we have an even older one, too) and I think/hope/pray I just ordered a new one (mounted over range with fan) from my best pal Amazon. DS says he will install. Fingers crossed.
Thanks, Steps, for being our founder/historian. I thought it seemed like longer than two years.
Cold and blustery here today. We walked our 30 minutes outside, but for the rest of my walk, I opted for the gym. I'm still 775 steps short of my 10K, but I'm off to a meeting now. I hope to finish later tonight.
A good day for me today: 18,592 steps for two walks. I walked the dog around the neighborhood about 1 mile, and then I walked about 6.3 miles on the trails. The paths were just a little sticky from the rain yet. I didn't mind it, though, which says something: That I felt good being out there. And motivated. Yay!
JRod: So great to hear from you. Thank you telling me of your struggles, too. I have faith in you that this time you will get back on on track. Me, too. Happy Birthday, by the way! Perfect gift to yourself is any gift that helps you be your best and healthiest self. My dh has a problem with plantar fasciitis, too, and I see how it can be a real issue when it comes to exercise. Careful with that.
men: You have already encouraged JRod to take up spinning. Isn't that awesome? Yay, you. A bit of history: The Roll Call had always been the Main board, even before 2011, but it was never as consistently posted until this reincarnation, which we can thank our judy for re-starting it. In 2011, Tnet added a lot of new boards, Healthy Teachers being one of them. I started posting the Roll Call thread over there, thinking that's where Bob R/CA wanted us to post. But it got started up on the Main Board once again, and with more posters visiting this page than the Healthy Teachers one, so I stopped posting it there. And here we are! If you want to see my old posts just for kicks, here's the url:: [link removed]
Bev: Careful on the slick driveway and cooler temps. If you are at your mom's you may have to take up housewalking, like poster "Old Walker", though I'm sure she's younger in spirit and health than her name suggests due to all her walking! ;) Where are you Old Walker?
Elaine: Rain certainly gives us walkers a challenge, doesn't it? Good job on the yoga. You must be flexible and have great balance. So important.
Judy: We are scheduled for rain later today. Isn't it great? The hills are turning green. Beautiful. Keep up the steppin'. Judy, do you like walking with your walking sticks? A hiker once told me it gives you a better workout than walking without them. Burns more calories, maybe?
Babs: Your activities always make me smile. You have a wonderful life filled with family and fun. Hooray for you keeping up your walks. Florida--does that make you what they call a snowbird? :)
Ron: You are doing really with your walks. Hope your wife wasn't too mad at you for losing her Fitbit after borrowing it one time! Ha, I think I would have been mad if it were my dh. Getting her a quick replacement was a good idea. :)
Alison/AUS: Congratulations on being a "Runner"! That is quite an accomplishment, even coming back after your fracture. That took determination and grit.
I'm sorry if I forgot anyone. And if there are any lurkers out there, come join in. We'd love to hear what you do. It motivates me, and you just might encourage others.
...See MoreGot into my twice a week routine this AM with spinning class. We had a sub instructor I hadn't had before so it was a nice change. One wouldn't think the instructor could change the experience that much yet still get a good work out. Today there were two nine minute stretches of just endurance. I ended up putting in 17 miles for the hour.
I am making friends in the class and everyone is so supportive and helpful. There were 3 of us wearing our new spinning shoes but I am the only one new to wearing them. I did better at getting them off the pedals but I still needed guidance on getting them attached. I did better this time so it's getting into my muscular memory
I've enjoyed lurking and seeing what everyone's been up to. Haven't we been doing the roll call for over a year now and it's still going?
If you look at the Healthy Teachers Chatboard, I posted an Exercise Roll Call on June 13, 14 & 15 of year 2011! So it has been much longer than a year. Ah, it made me wistful to read my enthusiasm in those early days. And to read that I was doing these hikes with my dog back then. I want to get that same passion back. Having a hard time!
I've been very irregular with my exercise. I do get the dog out for his walk--usually at a park, so it is nice for him, as well as me. What I should do when I get back home is head out for the trails, but I seem to be making excuses for myself, and end up not going. I know--not like the old me, is it?
Part of the reason (or excuse) I have is that my dog is showing his age now, and requires a lot more care. I can't leave him for very long in the house unsupervised, for he has "accidents". It's a daily issue, sadly. Also, he gets restless in the wee hours and I get up and take him outside, just in case he's gotta do his "business". Could be 1am, or 2am or 3am--any time. Come to think of it, that's probably what my problem is: lack of sleep. I don't know what the answer is, but I'm trying to figure something workable out.
Bev, I am so glad you and your dh were not hurt badly when the truck hit the restaurant you were in. What a shock that must have been.
I missed coming to wish you all a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Hoping and wishing you all a new year of good health, positive thinking, and sticking to our goals!
Yesterday, stepping on the scale after the holidays brought me to near tears. I had to go to renew my drivers license (took 3 hours!). I had resolved to check out a new gym attached to a hospital. As soon as I walked in, it felt right. I was given a tour and it was so much more than my previous gym.
Since I retired, the budget has been adjusted so that I can stay home with my 87 year old mother. She is relatively healthy, her mind is still sharp, but she doesn't quite have the stamina her mind tells her she does. My biggest issue with her is her balance in open areas. She has to hold on to something and usually it's not her cane or walker. Give her an arm or a shooping card and she is fine.
Any way. I talked to my husband about the gym and he told me sign up if I was really going to use it. So as a birthday gift to myself (55 years old today), I am signing up! I'll have to be careful with the workouts I choose since I am still having issues with my plantar fasciitis.
I am excited about this gym since it offers a spin class that I am going to try. I think men is our resident cyclist and she had encouraged me to give that a try.
Sorry this post is so long, but I missed be an active participant and even motivational to some.
