I just taught a young man (8th grade) who has several documented learning differences and challenges (ADHD+). Since he works very slowly, the psychologist who tested him recommended that he be graded only on what he completes.

The school, however, only gives 50% extra time on tests, and I'm pretty sure that neither the admin or teaching staff would philosophically support such an accommodation.

I'm bringing this up now because the mom just emailed me, wondering if her son should continue at our school; she likes the small classes and individualized attention, but she wonders if going to a school that provides such an accommodation would be a better fit.

QUESTION FOR YOU: Are there public or private schools that you know of that allow a student's exam score to be based on completed elements alone? In other words, if a student only completes 50% of a test that everyone else is expected to complete (even with extra time), that student would be able to earn a 10...See More
Lulu I've seen schools that allow for unlimited time for kids with LD's, but not schools that are not specifically LD schools (e.g., special schools for kids with developmental disabilities) or classrooms for such kids within mainstream schools, that grade only on what has been finished.

historyteach I'm a public school teacher. I have to do whatever the IEP says. What we would usually do instead is modify the test to be shorter, have fewer answer choices, put fewer questions per page (chunking) and/or make the final exam a daily grade if they fail it.

Theo Thanks, Lulu and historyteach. It's an interesting situation since we are a private school -- we don't use IEPs, but we do try to use specific accommodations as recommended by the counselor. Since we have more and more students with LDs, however, situations like these that invite more IEP-like solutions may be coming down the pike.

BA I've never seen an IEP such as this. I've seen many that include extended time for test. Some that include having tests read to them and even use of a scribe to write answers. Sometimes fewer choices on multiple choice questions.Sometimes fewer questions. Occasionally use of notes. If the test is to grade only the questions that are completed, I wo...See More
