Hello all! I have been following this chat board closely as I recently had an interview for a DODEA nursing position! I was wondering if anyone had any advice/guidelines for nursing hiring, or if they could maybe ask any of the nurses they currently work with. It would be greatly appreciated!
CmcI may do that in the future. I am currently the special needs coordinator so I'm going to stick with the permanent job for now. I was looking for a change (current situation: death by paperwork!) but jobs are super competitive here. Lots of nurses looking to work with not many positions to fill
Most of the interviews I have had with DoDDS were the same 7 questions (e.g. Why DoDDS?, Tell me about a successful lesson you did with planning, differentiation, assessment, Tell me about a time you had a challenging situation and how you dealt with it, Tell me etc).Even when I flew to DC for the Job Fair type interviews they used to do, it was the same 7 questions. When I interviewed with a principal for my first DoDDS position 3 months later, he asked me the same 7 questions. I often wondered if he had even read my original answers or whether he was checking to see if my answers had changed.
I did have one SPED interview where they asked me about my experiences with an age/disability group specific to their school and how I would deal with certain situations.
Other questions that have been posted:
1. Tell us about your background 2. Standards (Something about how you use standards) 3. Typical day in your class 4. How you use formatives and summatives 5. Your experience with PLCs 6. How you use technology 7. Why [your subject area]? 8. Something about how you use accommodations 9. Describe your experience with Common Core 10. Describe Continuous School Improvement 11. Whole Language approach 12. Something about team planning 13. How do you use data 14. What does a lesson plan look like?
The biggest thing is really trying to think about your background, experience, teaching practices, etc. and making mental notes of the best bits you would like to have a chance to share. Then, when you get the right question, answer the question, but also take the opportunity to present the points that you think will help you to impress or stand out.
Some current trending topics with DoDEA include data, using data/assessments to refine and target your teaching, backwards design and using the standards to inform/design your teaching/assessments, collaborative teaching strategies (between teachers and students), etc.
IbeforeE@Mary - thank you for your detailed response and advise. So if you were in my position, would you just hold out for overseas position, being a Vet, or put in stateside options (with the ultimate goal being overseas schools?) PS are you a Vet as well?
HelpOthersI am not a Vet, which is why it did not hurt me to go the stateside route first. If you are a Vet, you may want to hold out, so you can use your Vet preference in the hiring process.
hahaI believe it varies. Principals get a certain amount of time off and have some flexibility about how/when they take it. Hiring will go on regardless, if there are positions to be filled.
HelpOthersI think most take the month of July off when they can. I believe they work 222 days, so it depends how many non-student days they worked through (spring break, etc.) the year as to how many days they have available to take off during the summer.
My name is Anthony and I am a teacher out in California trying to get into dodea. I was wondering if working at a military academy that is not part of DODEA will increase my chances on being hired? I have a masters in education and a BA in history I will be getting my MA in history by the end of the year I also have a cleared CA credential in social science and 3 years in public school education in CA.
To be honest, the main way to significantly increase your chances is to increase your areas of certification/qualification with DoDEA. SS/History is a fairly competitive field and you would really need to be able to offer a wider range of subject areas to increase your chances. AP courses/AVID, which only require workshops, other subjects like Drama, Health, Journalism, etc. could all be qualifications that would be helpful for your cause.
HelpOthersI agree with haha's statements. Also, the pay you receive in CA may be higher than what you will receive in DoDEA. You may want to look into this before deciding to apply.
Email...See MoreI finally got information about accessing e-qip and fingerprints!
Here's a breakdown of my experience so far:
Application - qualified: November 2017
*No email to re-verify application info (in February I think? - thanks to the folks on this board I went ahead and did it)
Email for referral: April 3
Email for interview: May 14 (I had kind of assumed it had already been filled)
Interview: May 16
*Notified that my application was incomplete May 18th - did not accept some of references because they weren't principals. Several emails/phone calls about about this. *Still* waiting on one more to be accepted.
Account inactive: May 21
Tentative Offer via phone and then follow-up email: May 21
Accepted tentative offer: May 23 - first set of paperwork including background check forms, employment verification, pay scale, etc.
Received in-processing and passport paperwork: May 25 - long list including medical forms, anti-terrorism training, and other records (birth certificates, marriage certificate, previous military, etc.).
Received email from security about error on form: June 7 and returned same day
Sent passports in June 8th (we had gone out of the country right after accepting)
Emails regarding fingerprinting cards and e-qip access: June 13
Just need to send in my husband's medical letter (he goes to the doctor next week) and get the fingerprints done (once I receive the cards). And then... wait for orders? Try to plan the pack-out? Any help about what to do/how to plan for what's next would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to everyone on the board and good luck to those still waiting!
slpgeekI received the fingerprint cards the same day and returned them the next day. We've gotten all the forms filled out and emailed out today. I'm just waiting for confirmation that everything has been received. I *think* that is everything now except for waiting for the final word. Fingers crossed that it is soon! Thanks again for everyone's help!
