Is it really the lengthy process that I am seeing to transport pets to Japan...i.e. 6 months between microchip/shots and when they can go if you don't want them to be in quarantine for a lengthy period. Also, is it true what I am seeing about not being able to ship a vehicle to Japan?
In truth you probably wouldn't want most US spec cars here anyways. Learning to drive on the other side of the road is tricky for some people and having the steering wheel on the left doesn't really help. Also many roads and parking spaces are on the narrow side so many US cars would be the most fun to drive. There are plenty of very nice used cars on sale at or near all of the bases.
Some people will also be able to find a good house and get moved in before school but many people are still in temporary housing when they report to school (we were both times) and it's not that big of a deal. Report day this year is August 21. You will get admin days off for delivery of your household goods etc when you move in to permanent housing if you are working when it happens.
I had only Europe on my preferences, but I've received two requests for interviews in Japan which caused me to think. Can anyone give me information about Darby Elementary and/or Sullivans Elementary and/or life in Japan? Please and thank you.
Sullivans is part of Yokosuka which is nearby to Yokohama/Tokyo. It is a very nice base with good facilities and an interesting local community outside the gate. The base is right on the water (Navy) which is great for the scenery and the breeze. There are plenty of shopping, restaurants and things to do close to base and Yokohama and Tokyo are close enough for a day trip for shopping dinner etc.
Darby is part of Sasebo, a very nice, smaller base, also on the water. It is on a different island then Tokyo/Yokohama with generally warmer weather. Nagasaki is the big city in the area and the area has a lot to offer.
They both would be very nice places to start with DoDDS. Yokosuka is one of the top postings in the world (IMHO). Japan in general is amazing and many/most people love it here. I guess it would depend on why you were limiting yourself to Europe in the first place but I certainly would not turn down a job in Japan if you really want to get into DoDDS.
Hello Alll! I was recently hired in a kinder position in October! So far I am loving it but today my principal came around and gave me a a letter asking me to write down locations that I am willing to go to if there is a RIF. Should I be worried or is this a common practice within DODEA? I'm the low man on the totem pole :(.
TeacherMama K in Daeguwell, that is common in all schools, right? we call it de-staffing in my county. when K numbers go down sometimes you lose that bubble class. Where are you posted now?
RIF's do happen stateside. If it does they will try and place you in another school but there is no guarantee (as opposed to overseas where they must find you a position somewhere overseas if you are a permanent employee).
Ok, teachers. Talk to me about what out of your classrooms you will bring with you to DODD. I have spent so much $ making my Kindergarten class room the way I want it. I hate to abandon all of that. And my books. I have to take my books, right??

happyteacherNow I'm waiting too... had an interview morning. And my principal is out of the building in meetings today, so I can't even ask her if they've emailed her! Waiting game commences....
I just received my first email for a referral list. It is for Bahrain MS/HS.
It is exciting, but I did not select Bahrain as one of my locations on my EAS.
In your opinion, does this mean that they are having issues filling the position and pulled everyone? Thus, the referral list would be on the shorter side?
We did this when w...See MoreFor what it's worth, the people who have actually lived and taught there have said it's very nice, westernized and apparently safe. Also, I believe you end up getting more money because (like many places in the ME) schools run Sun-Thursday with Fri and Sat off (which means they have to pay you more for working Saturday).
We did this when we worked in an int'l school in a much less westernized ME country and you get used to it pretty fast.
