MACBOOK AIR ADVICE

I am in the process of purchasing a new mini laptop and was concerned about compatibility issues with a Mac at my school. Years ago a colleague used a Mac and whenever he shared documents they were illegible. With technological advances I am sure this problem has since been resolved, but I would like feedback from actual users as well as suggestions regarding other suitable options. Thanks for your input!
