Hello! Anyone come from schools that feature a K-12 Arts event? We're looking to try something where we as a department feature all our kiddos but are grappling with the sheer number of artworks for such an undertaking. Any ideas or feedback from those who do it would be much appreciated!
Stage Construction - building infrastructure such as walls and backdrops
Set Design- what does this planet look like? terrain, weather, inhabitants, etc
Narrative- how did this place come to be? who are the main characters and what type of lives did they lead?
Tech- We happened to have a few skilled teachers in technology and we taught students how to use lighting, sound and simple animation (flip-book style) to make the exhibit come to life. It's amazing how far you can get with fairy (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and flood (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. lights.
These were the main teams and the beauty of it was that each day (or week, whatever is more managable) students could choose which team they wanted to participate in and could switch it up when they wanted to try something new. The key to this is having the daily task/activity pre-planned and largely self-led. This is a lot of work but really no different than having your lesson plans ready.
It's a big undertaking but the students get very involved and since it is a year-long project, they are so proud at the end of the year when they get to unveil it to the school, admin, peers and parents. It's cool because they are not taking home 100+ projects a year (or more acuretly leaving them in the classroom for you to throw away or hoard), but there is also the question of longevity. How long does this new project stay up at the school? What happens to the materials used to construct such a project? We obviously can recycle the tech, but in our case, a lot of painted cardboard went to the dumpster.
By the way....80-90% of the exhibit was made with recycled materials :) We called the exhibit "Mad Bubble".
Matthew AugustTake a look at what I am doing at crittercreekhollow.com and I think you might want to consider this project for your school. Thanks, Matthew
The series consists of numerous children's stories addressing many of life's challenges with specific focus on living with special needs. The stories involve different animal families resident to an imaginary community known as Critter Creek Hollow. We are very excited about this project as it offers students a hands-on opportunity to provide illustrations using their very own, unique interpretation of individual scenes within the stories.
You can find more information and some of the illustrations we have received so far at crittercreekhollow.com

What type of school do you teach in ( public private charter etc.)?
Do you have an assigned budget for supplies for the year?
If so what is the budget?
Do you feel that is a realistic budget?
What is a realistic budget in your opinion for a school year worth of art supplies?
Have you have ever used alternative solutions outside of a store to obtain art supplies?
If so who/what or where?

How many classes a day do you teach?
How many different lessons do you teach in a week?
How frequently do you buy art supplies?
Where do you get inspiration or ideas for projects/lessons?
Do you think it is easier to buy art materials all at once or spread out throughout the year in increments?
If in increments, how often would be ideal for your life/schedule?
What is an expensive material you wish you could afford for students/ or use more of throughout the year?
What materials do you use most?
What materials do you wish you had/need more of?
What materials would be on your wish list if you could have any material without worrying about a budget?
Are there any supplies you run out of most frequently/ need replenishing?
Would you/ Have you ever used a subscription service for art materials?

Would you use recycled materials in projects/lessons if you had access to them?
What is your biggest struggle/obstacle when it comes to materials?

Does your site collect shop fees? And what is your method of collecting and making sure you get them from the students? I teach in California where it's against ed code to require a shop fee to pass a class but it helps fund my class. Any ideas? I thought about that website site where people can buy supplies for the classroom.

Our school has a new principal and he likes to do random walk-thrus. Admins make me nervous because my classroom dynamic is very different than they expect. Like, in a traditional art classroom, all the students are relatively working on something at their desk (looking busy). In my classroom, students on various steps of processing and developing their work and sometimes there is down time because students are waiting for a process to be done. I let them take a break until they need to work again. So my new Principal has walked in on this numerous times and I feel scared because I don't know him or what he is thinking. These walk-thrus are not evaluative but can be evidence for other admins during evaluation time to get rid of me. I teach 2 photo 1 classes starting with traditional photography and 3 advance photo classes doing digital work without classroom computers. I know what you're thinking, why don't you have the advance students do darkroom? It's expensive, not all students are forced to pay lab fees and students waste a lot of supplies especially, if they don't want to do darkroom. Should I start looking for another job? I will do my best to make them look "busy" but there will be those days or times in which I cannot predict.
EricaWell I have a update. So he goes through our department at least 3 times a month. Random days and random times although he's never hit my 2nd period(my best class) or 6th period in which I feel it's unfair bc he's rolled around during teachers preps and said hi but not me. So he sent the AP in charge of our department to talk to me to get insight. ...See MoreWell I have a update. So he goes through our department at least 3 times a month. So he sent the AP in charge of our department to talk to me to get insight. The AP evaluated me last year and everything went well. He's the discipline AP and we have a good work relationship bc I am able to handle my own discipline issues. He knows I'm good with the kids on discipline and maintaining my classroom to be a safe place. So we talked about my school year so far and about the visits and what he can do to give me support. Seems fair and the AP is very workable to help me. I know what I have to do and open about suggestions is just that a lot of teaching strategies are geared for core classes where content is learned and not practicing skill. Unfortunately, in my class skill has to be learned outside of class at various times. Then what does that leave me? I have been impementing activities and assignments but it takes a lot of time to fill in all the time. I'm hustling to do this for all my classes (6 classes, 5 periods, a lot of combo classes) but a lot of my lesson planning time is spent on IB and AP which I'll admit is extremely challenging when students are not expected to pay fees or get their own equipment. I'm doing my best through the challenge.

EricaI agree with Josie. When all the staff at the school meet for PLC, art department is always left out but expected to come and participate. We're expected to reflect on the objective of that meeting. It's always been that way because the problems usually underly in the core classes.
I am going on a group interview tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was told there would be five of us there being interviewed. This is for elementary art. Even though I have experience teaching elementary as a long term maternity leave leave teacher, I am scared to pieces.
