Classroom Management: Talking and Disrespect

lease advise. I have done everything by the book. I started the school year with strong expectations. I planned and practiced procedures. Yet my students still do not listen to me or seem to take me seriously. They talk over me and other students. They constantly disrespect me. I just don't get it because I am very organized, caring and I have a very dynamic teaching style. I strive to get to know my students and provide positive behavior support, but it's not working for me. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You really need to have someone come and observe because it sounds like you're doing the right things. I will say this - it can take time. Try not to see it as blanket 'disrespect' or if you do see it that way, then see that disrespect everywhere. See it in church when folks' cell phones go off or when people are talking during the sermon. If that's disrespect, then it's hardly just directed at you by these kids. Didn't a Congressman interrupt one of the President's speeches?

So don't take it personally because if you do, you're done for. You're up against the full impact of modern society and in our modern society, we don't quiet down for much. I've even heard cell phones and whispering during weddings!

My first principal told me "You will learn your voice. You will learn what works for you." I learned that if I got really mad and yelled, for me the kids got worse, not better. He said, "What works for one teacher doesn't work for the next."

If you want to figure it out faster, ask one of the master teachers in your building to come and observe and then - be open to what they have to say. But I'd say - it's pretty much trial and error - what are you trying to teach? How are you teaching it? To be dynamic about a topic that's dull as dust is rather a challenge. To be a dynamic lecturer I think is really a contradiction in terms. To read aloud to them from their textbook - even dynamically - will likely not gain a class's attention. Good luck.

What do you call "positive behavior support"? If it's your complementing or praising them when you catch them doing what you want them to do, many students find that condescending and intrinsically disrespectful.
