Hi,

I've been hired as maternity leave sub for a high school Spanish teacher. I have also been interviewed and will be considered for a permanent opening in the fall. That means that I will be on the new teacher observation list and I really need to show what "my classroom" would look like.

The problem is that the teacher I will be subbing for told me repeatedly that she has terrible classroom management. She said that she has a high threshold for noise and doesn't like conflict. She allows gum, eating, some cell phone use, and talking/chatting.

How am I supposed to run the classes the way I think they should run without causing total mutiny? The kids know that I'm a sub. Is this a lost cause? As far as battles, I'm willing to live with the gum as long as they aren't smacking, blowing bubbles, etc. I don't mind water bottles with lids or screw tops. However, I don't want the chips and other snack eating and I definitely don't want the talking unless it's topi...See More
