I am a tutor currently working with a pair of brothers grades 2 and 4, who arrived from Puerto Rico less than a year ago. So, of course, their English level is on the low side. There's no problem getting the younger one to spontaneously use English during our sessions. The problem is with the older one, C. C understands better than he speaks, which is good in some ways. However, C responds to me in Spanish nearly all the time when I speak to him in English. He also sometimes writes his written asnwers in Spanish instead of English--even though I think he could have done some in English.

Part of me questions whether I really have to pick this battle. On the other hand, it takes practice to learn a new language. I speak from experience on this. I think some of it is fear, though.

How can I best approach this?
