Start a new discussion...
I have a student who is getting more and more disruptive. At the beginning of the year, he was very well-behaved. Now, he has adopted this "gangster cool" attitude. One student in his table group said that this student has been swearing during table discussion time. On his homework, he wrote "gangsta" and "legit." When I'm teaching, he whispers side comments to his friends.

I know he has trouble with his dad at home and I do think he has emotional problems. I have probably not been as "strict" with his behavior as I need to be. Instead, I've tried talking with him to see what is going on. Today, I finally took away recess, but it did not seem to help. When I spoke with him, he said, "I like having you as my teacher. I like your class because it's really fun and you are nice. I know why I'm in trouble- I was talking when I wasn't supposed to."

But, then, the behavior continued after our talk.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Or, you could just say, "Folks, I need everybody's attention right now," wait for him to stop talking to his neighbor/s, then continue.

If he continues, address him directly: "Tom, could you please keep your eyes and ears on me right now? Thanks."
