Hi there, i am going to be doing a mini lesson on beginning Elkonin/Letter boxes. Has anyone had any experience with this? I am still having some trouble understanding it and figuring out how to explain it to kids with out sounding too complicated to them.

SHB. Actually, I am wanting to use them to teach the concept of segmenting words into sounds. I was just wondering how to introduce this technique.

Cath I use Elkonin mats with my students to teach them how to segment and blend CVC words. Email me if you want a copy of the mat I use. Here is how I introduce them: I give each student (I do it small group but you could do whole class if necessary) a laminated mat and three counters (could use pennies or whatever small enough).
