I am completing my PME through Queen's University. Currently, I am taking a course in self-regulated learning. As a College Professor, I am surprised by the number of students who do not demonstrate the skillset of a successful self-regulated learner; I am interested in utilizing what I know, and what I am still working to learn, in order to help them become successful, self-regulated learners. The application is called Class Updates and works like this:
We help connect students and teachers with instant push notifications so students never have to worry about forgetting a presentation being due or class being canceled. All the teacher has to do is sign up on the application and create a class for their relevant school and tell their students to sign up. Once signed up they will receive instant notifications right to their phone as soon as it is sent.
We've also built a calendar function so students can track all of their classes and future notifications in one place.

Hi Jane I would like to speak with you. I think that your a really great student and I am not accusing you of doing anything. I'm not hear to talk about personal feelings. I have a profession and it's teaching. In my job if I feel like my job is in jeopardy I have to do certain things to ensure my job. I'm not saying your doing anything to my job but if I get uncomfortable vibes then I unfortunately have to remove whoever. I'm sorry but I can't have you not work here, eat here etc.
Other things you could say to add in if necessary to your situation would be:
I enjoy talking to you but I would really like to avoid topics like romance and love also my personal life.
I'd perfer if you didn't talk to me about your romanic relationships.
Also I don't mind giving you help in school or personal life, but I would like avoid topics such as marriage, puberty, having children etc.
-Make sure the student knows it's nothing personal and that you are not telling them that they have done something wrong or that it's because you don't like them.
- This situation is like if a student brought a knife to class and started showing it off to everyone. You would eventually get uncomfortable vibes and have to remove them from the class to make sure you don't get in trouble or hurt and the students safety as well.
- Also NEVER take a student flirting with you personally. If it happens and it's obvious then:
1. Leave the room and tell a nearby teacher.
2. Go back in the room with the teacher ( who will be your witness)
3. Tell the student what their doing is inappropriate and not okay or professional. Explain how it can affect your job and how it can affect them in the professional world after high school.
4. Tell the principal about it then take any further action.
- Make sure you tell them not another teacher!
- if you have intellectual conversation about romance and the like with other students when this 'flirting student ' is around be respectful and ask them
'We've had the talk before. These other students talk to me a lot. Some of the conversations I have with them are the we ones I can't have with you. Is it okay if I talk about it with them when I'm around you? Are you sure it won't hurt your feelings?'
-- Support the student and understand they might be going through a rough time in their life. You don't want to hurt their feelings or shun them away.
- Don't lie to them and tell them it's about perception or something else. Don't do things behind their back.
- MAKE SURE TO REVIEW AND TALK ABOUT IT WITH YOUR BOSS!
I am trying to create a tool for teachers to aid the process of learning names and faces of students in the beginning of the school year. Not only were they simply copying, they were doing it poorly. When I’d question their methodology and suggest that they were plagiarizing, they were adamant that they were not plagiarizing because what they wrote did not look exactly the same as the text from which they were copying. Finally, through trial and error, I discovered that if students read a paragraph, then covered it, then stated what they read in one sentence, they could often summarize the paragraph in their own words.
Summarizing allows students to re-frame their understanding by identifying key facts and concepts, filing information away in long-term memory in a more concise way. Much research has been done on the efficacy of summarizing. Marzano, Pickering, and Pollack do an excellent job of compiling and presenting that research in teacher-friendly terms.
