thinking about becoming a reading teacher...

Hello all, I am thinking about beginning a masters program in Reading. I was just hoping to hear about what you like/dislike about being a reading teacher / reading specialist. Also, how secure is that position in your school? Do those positions get cut a lot? Thanks for your help!

I was waiting to see if any of the regular people would post, but since no one has, yet, I thought I'd answer. I was a reading teacher for a while, then a classroom teacher. I am now back to teaching reading. I really hated to leave, because I loved it in my old building. But I love my job, now, too. I love teaching reading. I miss the give and take of a classroom. I miss being able to relate everything you teach to everything else - history to science, asking the music teacher to help the children understand rhythm and math, etc. I wouldn't go back, though, because to work with a child who struggles to read and be able to help them progress in this absolutely essential ability is wonderful. There are challenges - scheduling can be difficult; sometimes the children are unwilling to miss a particular class in order to work with you; some teachers would really rather teach their class of children without any assistance from anyone else. (Actually, I have had that problem in the distant past, but not recently.) But there is nothing I would like to do more than this job. I love our language and enjoy helping chldren see connections that can help them - root words, prefixes and suffixes, consistent sounds pr My position is fairly secure, I think, because the chances of our Title I funding being eliminated is not likely. I don't know how that works in other schools, especially those who do not have much or anything from Title I. If you do decide to pursue your degree in reading, be sure that the courses include research based information. Some courses are still predominately whole- language based and you want to be sure to include information about how to incorporate phonemic awareness and phonics in your instruction.

Teri I earned my Masters of Education, Reading degree two years ago. Honestly, I decided to get the MA because the 300 hour reading endorsement we were required to get was 1/2 of the Masters degree.
