The current situation with North Korea bears a striking resemblance to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. For anyone teaching social studies, I'd like to suggest a visit to my website, where I've posted a great deal of background material about the missile crisis--from the video of Kennedy's speech on Monday, October 22st to actual daily headlines from Chicago newspapers all through that long, stress-filled week. Suggested activities for students are also included, and samples of pop culture from the time period. Cold War on Maplewood Street is historical fiction about one young girl's experience of what remains the most significant week in American history. I hope you'll take a look and see the potential for an important topic to address with students from 6th-8th grades. Just search my name or my book title and you will find my site.
bcaipen I have been talking a lot about this topic in my current events mini lessons I do every Friday. You bring up some good points! I like how you connected it to the Cuban Missile Crisis. I have talked to my students about that connection as well. I will search your name and check out your site to see how you connected these ideas in a lesson! Thanks.
