¡Hola! Palomablanca
I'm wondering how much I should try to cover in a 40 minute class, how much they will retain from week to week, and if anyone has experience teaching such a program if they'd like to offer some much-welcome ideas, advice, or resources for me!
...See MoreA colleague of mine would like to learn Spanish; he has a ti time share in Mexico and would like to become more co conversant. He asked me about Rosetta Stone and I told him I I didn't know much about its effectiveness.
I suggested that he try the Duolingo app to start and that I would ask on this chat board for any suggestions.

John BoehnerI have a close friend who taught himself with RS. He was (is) very motivated (unlike many high schoolers) and even goes weekly to "Spanish only" lunches. He knows vocabulary very well, but the lack of grammar structure has been difficult for him. Each weekly has has grammar questions for me.
We would use subjunctive after a Me gusta expression when there is a change in subject, but we are seeing times when indicative is used. Please enlighten me!
example: Me gusta que todos tengan los libros hoy.
Now, can you give me some examples (and an explanation) of when you would NOT use subjunctive after Me gusta when there is a change in subject?
Daniel HansonYes, Laura. Our school district has used Descubre by Vista Higher Learning for the past year. We like the technology. The pacing is hard, especially on 4x4 block schedule. We have made some adaptions to the suggested pacing. The new edition "Senderos" has better pacing and even more technology features. I would recommend it.
Any suggestions on best textbook that is heavy on "communication" and light on grammar? I've started contacting publishers but would appreciate feed-back. I work at a small private school and am being asked to use more communication and less grammar emphasis. I teach middle school and high school. Thanks!
John BoehnerExploremos by National Geographic / Cengage. It's must shorter than most. Also, Senderos by Vista Higher Learning; same content basically as Descubre but pacing is over 5 levels instead of 3.
I plan on having them ...See MoreHi Bedolla, I haven't done as much with centers as I would like, although tomorrow I am trying out a few ideas. Tomorrow I'm doing some "testing" to find out what my new to me students know coming in from other teachers. I'm going to have them fill in a Zachary Jones Look book page from earlier this week on clothing.
I plan on having them make a menu with one side of "good" food and one side of bad, or one side what would you like to eat for dinner and not kind of thing. I've been told that one student has a bad peanut allergy and am looking to see if this student knows at least one word for peanut. Not sure on the other students but I like to bring in food so I'm hoping to find out limitations to that question. On the food topic I'd like to try a "tasting" station. I downloaded a mini story about Inka Kola to read and would like them to taste it and fill in a flavor profile.
I have purchased from teachers pay teachers some cards where the students put sentences in order. That was a good station. Each words had its own card.
I have used two hula hoops before as a Venn diagram and had them put cut up index cards in the right section. It worked pretty well for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. I had words like candle, bat, black cat, skeleton, pan, and witch. You may still be able to get hula hoops at a dollar store if you move quickly. They aren't available all year round in my area.
I have heard of teachers making a station on money from a country and who or what is on it and why they are important. I haven't tried that but like the idea.
Sue Fenton at the madamefifi site has a book called "Entrevista con un Zombi." I'm going to use that tomorrow to see how they do. There are various characters like singer, clown, robot, inventor, movie star, princess, selfie fan, astronaut, DJ, soccer player, mad scientist, grandma, pilot, shopping addict, headhunter (jobs) and tourist. There are 50 options so I can do a few at a time. Most are primarily present tense.
Looking forward to more discussion on the topic, Julieta
I am trying to complete requirements for my professional license. I need 9 credits in my content area and Massachusetts will only accept courses in Spanish. Has anyone taken any online grad courses they would recommend.
Hey there!! I am thinking about doing interactive notebook with my 8th grade Spanish classes next school year. Has anyone done it? Is it too 'childish'? Would love some input! TIA
Can a teacher in Pennsylvania pass a langua...See MoreHello. I am currently certified in Elementary and Middle School subjects. I took a Spanish fluency test in Illinois and I was qualified to teach Spanish/ Bi lingual for 5 years. I teach k-5 Spanish right now. I want to move to Pennsylvania and teach Spanish in Elementary school or Middle school.
Can a teacher in Pennsylvania pass a language test and become a language teacher without taking classes for the language she/he is teaching? Can they be hired first as a language teacher and then take the required classes?
