...we would have taken a pay cut this year. They said it was to save teachers' jobs, but they wouldn't guarantee hiring back those who were pink-slipped. As it is, after we voted this down, they ended up hiring back most of those who were laid off. It was an empty threat. Painful cuts were still made, but administrators also had to make cuts. Karen
CHICAGO (Reuters) – Workers at a Target Corp discount store in New York voted to reject union representation in a closely watched battle over unionization in the retail sector.
Workers at the Valley Stream, New York, store voted against union affiliation by a count of 137 to 85, Target said in a statement released Saturday. The vote was taken on Friday.
A union representative could not be reached for comment early Saturday.
Target employs thousands of workers at 27 stores in the New York City area. None of the Minneapolis-based company's 1,755 or so U.S. stores have union-represented employees.
Employees at the suburban store, located roughly 15 miles east of Manhattan, voted not to join the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500.
Target and the union had already filed unfair labor practice charges against each other with the National Labor Relations Board, according to an agency spokesman.
That makes it likely there will be objections to Friday's "hotly contested" election, said Donald Schroeder, an employment, labor and benefits attorney with law firm Mintz Levin.
Union members make up a small percentage of U.S. retail workers, and the percentage fell to 4.7 percent last year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart Stores Inc have long resisted having employees represented by unions at their stores.
Got to be some happy medium...
...See MoreThey must not realize that it is unions that keep their employers honoring no more than a 40 hour week, mandated breaks, no child-labor, etc.....
Some unions have gone overboard and that is a shame, but without them, I'm afraid we'll see an increase in the hours we work, working conditions, etc.
Got to be some happy medium...

My daughter who is still going to school to be a teacher needs to make ends meet and is thinking about getting a home daycare. She wanted to know if there are any grants for start up costs? She will have the daycare in her home, but could use a few thousand to update things. How can she do this?
What do you think about the investigation of the decade old test scores being altered and records being falsified by all levels from teachers to the superintendent in Atlanta?
Please refer the following email address to Judith Lane (Pantner) graduated from Xavier in 1967. Ray (Ralph) Fiorucci is looking forward to hearing from long time friends. Also, Sharon Pantner from Madison Number One Elementary School in Phoenix, Arizona. Hope you are safe, well and having a wonderful life. Thank you, ray.[email removed]
I'm from the US, and have read a bunch of the Ofsted reports online. Ofsted is a government agency in England.
Here is Ofsted's website:

For those of you in the US who have never heard of Ofsted:
"Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. We report directly to Parliament and we are independent and impartial. We inspect and regulate services which care for children and young people, and those providing education and skills for learners of all ages.
Every week, we carry out hundreds of inspections and regulatory visits throughout England, and publish the results on our website. To find an inspection report, go to the Find an inspection report page.
The aim of all this work is to promote improvement and value for money in the services we inspect and regulate, so that children and young people, parents and carers, adult learners and employers benefit."

Here is my general advice to UK teachers when being observed by someone from Ofsted, or having a discussion with that person:
Make sure you have a digital recorder going, or that you know how to use your smartphone to record.
I am subbing today, and as soon as I'm done on this post, I will be job hunting on the internet INSTEAD of paying attention to the students in my classroom. They can complain all they want to the regular teacher, but "frankly my dear, I don't give a damn". Write me up, call the district, tell f**cking AESOP for all I care. Starting with the New Year I am getting out of the Communistic school system.
I WOULD have made an excellent teacher. I actually care deeply about children. I know what makes them tick and I know how to take them from confused and uneducated to lovers of learning.
Like the poster "Ze"...I have witnessed horrors at the hands of tenured teachers. The "f" word in the faculty rooms about students on a daily basis is disheartening. We wonder why our students are failing. In two years of substituting full-time, and 8 districts, I have only come across 1 teacher that I felt was qualified and earning their pay.
What a crime. Oh well. I'd rather work at the local grocery store than be considered part of the education system. It is appalling and I would not be proud to teach. Yes, students need teachers like me. But guess what...it's selfish union crazy teachers who make $60000.00 a year or more, with paid summers, holidays, etc. that keep quality teachers like me out of the picture. Congratulations America, you're ruining our students because of your self-centered agendas. Way to go.
GinaTeachers do not make enough money. Substitute teaching is horrible, and hardly ever leads to jobs, as far as I've ever heard. Most teachers are dedicated, wonderful professionals. I just wish some of them would retire before they are 70, so the market would open a bit!
In my area, we often hear that a principal, or AP, has been "demoted" to teacher when some ish hits the fan. So, they couldn't control a bunch of adults, but we think they can control a room full of kids? I love the logic!
