Little Red was taking a big basket of goodies through the woods, to her grandmother’s house. As she was walking along, there appeared Mista Wolf, better known as Wolf Brown.
Little Red Says, "hez Mista Wolf; how you doing this afternoon?"
"I is doing fine, Little Red", sez Mista Wolf, "and whez you off to this fine day?"
Little Red sez, "I am taking this big basket of goodies through the woods to my Granny’s house. I got her some hotdogs, hamburgers, cole slaw, french fries, an apple pie, and a large pitcher of iced tea."
"UM, UM", sez Mista Wolf, "that sure sounds like some good eatin".
"Yes, Mista Wolf", sez Little Red, "I made it jus for her. I know she gonna like it."
"I espect she will too", sez Mista wolf. "Well, Little Red, have nice day; take it easy."
"You too Mista Wolf", sez Little Red, as she hurried on to Granny’s house.
- Just then Mr. Wolf got an Idea. Um those goodies smell good, and I am hongrey. I’ez just take a short cut to Miss Granny’s house and try to get some of those goodies. Mista Wolf ran as fast as he could to Miss Granny’s house and knocked on the door.
"knock Knock". Mista Wolf knocked good and polite.
"Whoz there," sez Miss Granny.
"It’s just me Mez Granny," sez Mista Wolf. I jus wanted to know if you gots some leftover grits for me to eat."
"Sure", sez Miss Granny’; "I got a plate full."
- Just as Miss Granny opened the door, Mista Wolf sez, "Hez Miz Granny; doz you have an old coat for me to wear? It’s been so cold out lately."
"Sure", sez Miss Granny, "I’ll get you one."
- Just as Miss Granny went to the closet, Mista Wolf shut the door behind her and locked it. Miss Granny tried to fuss but it was no use, no one could hear.
-Just then, Little Red came up to the front door and knocked.
"Knock Knock" - "Say Hez Granny", I brought you a big basket of goodies so we can eat and have a good time."
- Mista Wolf got slick and dressed up in Granny’s nightgown and cap. Then he got in her bed and pulled the covers up.
Then he sez in his best Granny voice - "Come on in, Little Red; I been a little sick today".
- Then Little Red came in and went to Miss Granny’s bed.
"Sey hez, Granny, what big ears you have!"
"The better to hearz you with my dear," sez Mista Wolf.
"Why granny", sez Little Red, "what big nose you have!"
"The better to smell those goodies with my dear," sez Mista Wolf.
"Granny", sez Little Red, "what big teeth you have!"
"The better to eat those goodies with my dear," sez Mista Wolf.
- Then Mista Wolf climbed out of Granny's bed and went for the goodies, but Little Red was quick; she hurried out the door and found Mista Farmer nearby.
Please Mista Farmer," sez Little Red. Mista Wolf trying to take my basket of goodies.
-Mista Farmer saw Mista Wolf. He took out his rake and chased Mista Wolf away.
"You stay outta here Mista Wolf", sez Mista Farmer. "These goodies belong to Miss Granny."
"Okay, Okay", sez Mista Wolf "I is sorry, really."
- Then Mista Wolf hurried back into the woods. Mista Farmer and Little Red got Granny outta the closet. Then they all had nice picnic under a big tree. Would you believe Little Red? She still liked Mista Wolf and left him some of her apple pie by the tree. Mista Wolf was very thankful and always looked after her from then on.
I wrote this story for my students entitled "Oscar", about a hound dog who sleeps by day but becomes a super hero at night, flying through the air and rescuing fellow dogs in trouble. Having come from Southeast Atlanta and hearing a lot of Uncle Remus, I find it best to use a good soft, Southern Black accent, the kind you hear on Sunday in a quiet, sermon kind of way. The kids really enjoy it. I get a kick out of it also. A soft copy of "Oscar" and other material is at the bottom of my home site at I also have "Oscar Grammar" I use to teach reading comprehension. This is also near the bottom of my home site right next to the story "Oscar".

Oscar
Oscar is an old hound dog of mine. I didn’t know Oscar had another life. It seems every night he would put on his red cape and fly off into the night, looking for fellow dogs in trouble. One night while everyone was sleeping, Oscar put on his cape and flew out the window. He was flying high in the air when he spotted a little dog being chased by a big dog. Oscar turned around in the air. He flew down and picked up the little dog. Then he carried him to safety.
Oscar flew away again, looking for other dogs in trouble. Oscar was rounding the neighborhood when he saw a dogcatcher trying to catch some dogs. The dogcatcher already had some dogs in his cage. Oscar sat down in front of the dogcatcher, cape and all. Then Oscar just smiled at the dogcatcher. The dogcatcher was not sure what to think at first. Then the dogcatcher ran toward Oscar with his net. Oscar leaped up and flew over the dogcatcher. The dogcatcher was scared. He had never seen a dog fly through the air before. Then Oscar opened the cage to the truck. All the dogs jumped out and ran away. Oscar knew he had done a good deed. Then he flew up and circled the dogcatcher. The dogcatcher ran to his truck and locked the door. He drove off and never came back.
I was still asleep when Oscar returned. When I got up, I saw Oscar sleeping. He just smiled and looked at me funny. I took him out and gave him a dog hamburger. When I made my own breakfast, I could not find the salt. Would you believe I found it right by his bowl? Oscar just smiled and acted like nothing was wrong. You know I think Oscar is smarter than he looks.
Oscar seems to be a very long sleeper. I see him sleeping all the time during the day. I wonder what makes Oscar so tired. That night as I fell asleep, I could hear movement in the living room.
Oscar looked in the door to make sure everyone was sleeping. Then he ran to the closet to get his cape. He flew off again looking for other dogs in trouble. He was soaring high in the air when he spotted a little dog being chased by two rottweilers.
Oscar quickly sprang into action. He dropped down from the sky and held one rottweiler by the neck with his teeth. Then he carried the rottweiler up and laid him in a tree. The other rottweiler watched in horror. Then Oscar flew back down and jumped on the other rottweiler. There was fur everywhere, and all of it belonged to the rottweiler.
When Oscar was finished, the rottweiler looked like he just had a bad hair cut. Then Oscar and the little dog walked off. Oscar took the little dog home. He flew back through the window and removed his cape.
Oscar was tired after his heroic night out. When I woke up, there was Oscar, asleep on the rug. I was wondering what made him so tired. It seems I have never seen him do anything but sleep. Oscar and I are best friends. Still, I wish I could tell people he can do other things than sleep. Just then, I looked at Oscar. He seemed somewhat funny, as if he were smiling. Well, I thought, I will just have to accept him as he is.
When Oscar woke up, I made him some lunch.
I went inside the closet to get a coat and looked down at the floor. I could see paw prints. Now how do you suppose he made those prints inside the closet? That night in bed, I thought I heard the closet door open.
While everyone was sleeping, Oscar went on another flight to rescue dogs in trouble. His cape was flapping in the wind. Far down below on the street, there was a big, hairy dog that was being chased by a bunch of yellow jackets. Oscar knew he had better think of something quick. He dropped down for a closer look. Then he swooped down and carried the dog to the woods. They waited until the yellow jackets went away. Oscar seemed a bit sore the next day. I didn’t know what caused it. Still, Oscar felt happy and content. That night, it was cold, so I fixed him a blanket by the fire. He just smiled and lay down on the blanket. When I thought he was comfortable, I went to bed.
Later, I heard sounds in the living room. Once again, Oscar was sailing through the sky looking for dogs in trouble. He was circling the city when he spotted an old hound dog shivering in the cold. He landed near the dog and gave a howl. The hound dog saw Oscar and came to him. When the hound came to Oscar, Oscar took him to a dog motel, and he signed him in. Oscar ordered two large, T-bone steaks, rare. Oscar left the hound comfortable and warm. That night as Oscar flew home, he was also wearing his red earmuffs that matched his red cape.
When Oscar got home, he quickly discarded his cape and went to sleep by the fire. The next morning when I got up, there was Oscar, fast asleep. I gave him a pat on his head. Oscar raised his eyes and just kind of smiled at me. I still didn’t know why he didn’t eat his breakfast. I guess dogs like him just don’t get that hungry.
When I got home that day, Oscar was still sleeping by the fire. He rose to his feet when he saw me. Later that night, Oscar seemed to be a little more restless. As I slept, I heard him moving in the next room.
Oscar made himself some coffee before leaving the house in search of dogs in trouble. The moon was shining as he flew across the night sky in his red cape. Down on the street below, there was a puppy that had become lost from its mother. Oscar flew down and picked up the puppy and carried him off to a nearby house with a garage. He raised the door and placed the puppy inside. Then he closed the door.
Oscar began to look for the mother of the puppy. Oscar looked everywhere for the mother. Oscar flew around all the houses, but he could not find her. Then he saw something moving in an old house. He flew down for a closer look. There was the mother taking care of the other pups. Oscar knew they were cold, so he built a fire in the fireplace and flew off to get the other pup. When he returned, he laid the pup by the fire with the rest of the puppies. Then Oscar flew off to get food for the family. He saw an Alpo truck make a delivery of dog food. He picked up some cans of Alpo and hurried back to the puppies. The family was glad to see him. Oscar made them some of his favorite chili over the fireplace. After the meal, Oscar flew off, his cape flapping in the wind.
The next morning when I got up, I went in to check on Oscar. He was still fast asleep. I thought I smelled chili powder on him. Oscar raised one eye and smiled. I just pat him on his head and gave him some breakfast. Later that night, I made sure Oscar was comfortable; then I went to bed.
I was almost asleep when I heard something moving in the living room. The moon was shining bright as Oscar flew off into the night sky. A policeman was watching as the shadow of a hound dog in red cape and earmuffs sailed across the moon. Oscar was making his usual flight over the city, looking for dogs in trouble. Oscar was flying over the river when he saw a dog trying to swim across. The dog was getting tired. Oscar knew he better think of something. He picked the dog out of the water and carried him to the other side. Oscar built a fire on shore so the tired dog could get dry and warm. Then Oscar flew off again. The tired dog gave a farewell howl. Oscar howled back. Oscar put his cape in dryer when he got home, and after putting it back in the closet, he went to sleep by the fire.
The next morning, I saw Oscar sleeping close to the fire. He raised his head when he saw me. Then he lay back down on his blanket. I never saw such a lazy dog, but I love him.
Oscar was drowsing by the fire when he saw the snow falling outside. He knew it was going to be a long night for one of his fellow dogs. He waited until everyone had gone to bed. Then he prepared for some heroic action. Ice was forming on his paws as he flew up, up, and above the town. He began looking intently at the ground below, in search of dogs in trouble. There on the top of a tall hotel, Oscar spotted a dog left out on the rooftop by his master. He swooped down to the roof of the hotel where the dog was. Then he carried the dog off the roof and to the ground below.
Oscar had a special key to get in locked doors. He used his key to get inside the hotel. Then he sneaked the dog past the guard and up the stairs of the hotel. Then he sniffed out the floor where the dog’s master lived. He found the room where the dog lived and let him in.
Oscar could hear the guard walking up the stairs to investigate. Just as the guard saw him, Oscar quickly opened the window and flew out. All the guard could see was a flapping cape and a wagging tail. Oscar stopped off for some hot chocolate on the way home.
I heard something moving in the living room. When I went to investigate, all I saw was Oscar asleep by the fire. I looked more closely at Oscar and thought for sure I saw a milk mustache.
Early that morning, I watched as Oscar lay, stretched out by the fire. As I walked by, I gave him a gentle pat on his head and scratched his ear. He raised his eyes and began to stretch some more. Then he went back to sleep. Later that night as the wind blew, I thought I heard the sound of feet on the roof.
With all the wind blowing, Oscar needed a running start to get off the ground. He used the roof as a runway. With a run and a mighty jump, Oscar was sailing through the air. His cape and matching earmuffs were a sight to behold.
Oscar slowly climbed high into the air, looking for dogs in trouble. As he flew high in the air, he could see many cars on the highway. Just then, he saw a fellow dog, stranded in the middle. There were cars everywhere. The stranded dog was getting real scared. Oscar turned and pointed his nose, down toward the dog. A car was coming right at the poor dog. Oscar quickly flew down. He wrapped the little dog up and carried him to safety. A driver was watching as the two dogs rose into the air and sailed away into the night. Oscar carried the dog back home. Then he began to fly home himself. As the ice formed on his cape, Oscar made his way back home and to his warm fireplace.
Oscar was almost frozen when he got back home. He could barely make it to the fire. When I got up the next morning, I looked in on Oscar. He was very cold and seemed to have a fever. I covered him with blankets and waited by his side. He seemed to be getting weaker as the hours went by. Once in a while he would move and then remain very still. He just lay there for a time.
Late that afternoon, I just knew Oscar was going to pass off and not wake up. Just then, I heard a howl at the front door. It was a big hairy dog. I didn’t know where it came from. He just came into the room and lay down beside Oscar. Then I heard another howl coming from the front door. When I opened the door, I saw a hound dog, and it also sat down beside Oscar. About an hour later, I heard a dog and bunch of pups barking at the front door. I couldn’t believe it. When I opened the door, they also came right in. The mother dog and all her pups snuggled up to Oscar. All those dogs just sat there and watched over Oscar. Once in a while, one of the dogs would nudge Oscar with his nose. For some reason all those dogs were trying to help Oscar. I finally dosed off in a chair while the dogs watched. When I awakened, I noticed the dogs nudging and occasionally howling at Oscar. I just knew Oscar was not going to make it. Then, the hairy dog, the hound dog, along with the mother dog and all the pups began to nudge and crowd all around Oscar. They just lay there like they knew something I didn’t. That’s it, I thought; Oscar is gone.
I was finally ready to send the dogs home. I started to push the dogs away. Then, I saw Oscar’s foot move. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Then it moved again - and again. Finally, Oscar raised his eyes and closed them. He didn’t move this time. Then Oscar kind of raised his head and lay back down. All the dogs began to howl and bark. The pups were licking Oscar in the face. The dogs stayed with Oscar the rest of the night.
The next morning when I woke up, all the dogs were gone. Oscar lay sleeping peacefully by the fireplace. I went to the kitchen to make some coffee. This time I was angry! Someone had made a mess in the kitchen! There was hamburger, ketchup, mustard and puppy chow all over the floor. I even found some pieces of hamburger bun in the mess. It looked like someone had a party; there were dog and puppy prints everywhere.
I was even more angry when I noticed a set of prints matching Oscar’s was on the stove and in the refrigerator. Yet, somehow I just couldn’t find it in my self to get on to Oscar. I just cleaned up the mess. When I was finished, I gave Oscar a pat on the head. It was then I noticed the ketchup on his whiskers. You know I think Oscar is smarter than he looks.

My son is reading Maniac Magee in Grade 6 and is struggling to keep all the events straight. Does anyone have any review sheets/questions that we might be able to use at night to review what is going on in the book during the day?
