I taught in California for 10 years before moving to Texas for another 8. I want to return to Northern California and I'm looking for suggestions on how/where to look for a position. Does anyone know of an organization that helps across state lines to help find new positions; such as a recruiter.
Northern CA is in a teacher shortage, so there are pretty good opportunities even in the middle of the year. Some of this depends on what you teach though, that is a big difference. For instance: sped or ELD have huge shortages. History or basic elementary ed, not so much, but there appears to be some need everywhere.
I'll be applying to a few MEd/Multiple-subject credentialing programs this year. After eight years of military service, I'll be separating and will hopefully become an elementary school teacher. Obviously, I'm not interested in becoming a teacher to get rich but I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea of the salary an elementary teacher with a Master's might earn? I might end up teaching in Orange or Riverside counties. Basically trying to plan since I have children and want to make sure we'll be financially okay (husband works as well).
I received my CA clear multiple subject credential in the early 90s. I am confused as to whether I am considered highly qualified. I had passed the CBEST. Does anyone know if I would have to take the CSET? I have received different opinions. Thanks!
America77Los Angeles Unified will sometimes do this. I've posted a link here. It may not be Kindergarten (could be another grade), but they will work with sponsoring a Visa.

They pay for the program and you get a salary while teaching as an intern. Most districts offer intern positions, but you have to pay for your program. Other districts may have this, but I know LA does.
The down side: You have to teach in a crap LA school when you don't know how to teach.
4 years ago I moved to CA with a certification from GA and no teaching experience. I have now been teaching at a charter school in CA for 3 years.
I recently logged online to look at my credential and to begin the registration for a credential clearing program, but noticed the renewal code 'RC' on my credential, which says "The holder must satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement within one year of the issuance date of this document in order to be eligible to continue teaching." Obviously I did not take the CBEST within my first year, BUT I was told that my SAT scores exempt me from this test.. Not sure why this code is still on my credential but I'm terrified to call CTC or my school for fear of losing my license/job.
Will I lose my preliminary credential, or just have to take the CBEST or reorder my SAT scores over the summer?
Anyone have a similar experience or inside information to guide me to the next step?
I moved here alone after college and have really felt that there has been no one to explain these things to teachers trying to navigate this credential clearing process. Even when calling or visiting offices to try to make sure I am doing everything correctly I feel that they have been less than helpful.
My guess is ...See MoreFrom what I understand, Basic Skills is met by most out of state basic skills tests. Mine was. You can check out whatever you took in Georgia here:
I just moved to San Diego County from Massachusetts with my certification in mild/moderate disabilities. My concern is that most job postings for jobs in special ed specific that I MUST have the EL Authorization as well as an added authorization in autism spectrum disorders. These were not available in Massachusetts (unless I acquired an addition degree in teaching ESL...) so they won't appear on my credential.
I know that California is desperate for special ed teachers and might hire me without these qualifications right off the bat, but I'm sure that varies by region. Should I apply to positions even if I don't have the required authorizations? Particularly in this area?
I have probably received a call from every district I applied to and was hired over the phone while I was still out of state. I stopped applying a couple of months ago, but still get multiple calls from districts. It is actually ramping up again, probably because we are getting close to school starting. I had an administrator send me an email saying that he was tentatively offering me a job, with no interview or even phone conversation, if my checked out. I had to turn him down, but they... seemed pretty desperate and didn't mention any issue with my credential.
My district applied for an emergency permit for the EL certification and I will have a year to pass the tests. No mention of ASD. I have heard the Bay Area has a worse teacher shortage than the rest of the state because of housing costs, but my guess is that you will find something being sped. Apply to everything and you will probably have more interviews than you can handle.
