I just wanted to post about how much I love my job. I work in a charter middle/high school in Warren that truly functions like a big family. Our budget is managed as well as it can be for our times, and we never feel alone, worried about getting pink slipped, etc. We don't get paid much--- average 32,000 per year, but there is something about us that warms my heart every day. Most of our kids are bussed in from Wayne County, and about 10% from Macomb, and it works for us. We are a well oiled machine most days. Every school has problems, and we have our fair share, but at the end of the day, we really did "make a difference"...I feel it in my heart. Our students are well behaved because we hold them accountable, and they love us for it.

Aw, I used to feel that way too My first year I was so smitten with having a job, I was ready to break my back for my school. It took a few months to see the real corruption that was going on. A few broken promises later and I am with the "haters" that don't like charters! Don't look for it... I wish I could have stayed naive as long as possible!

Tornado I have worked at my school since 2001. So, I hope that assists you in believing that I am not naive. Either way, my school is wonderful. Charter or not, we are educators...so it is not really about us, is it? -Tornado

Oh yes it is Yeah it is about us. I hate the kind of attitude espoused below. Just because we are teachers--and let's face it, many of us are women--doesn't mean we shouldn't get a fair wage. Back in the day (and heck, even today), women worked for "pin money", which meant that we were paid sh*t wages. Only because of unions have we been able to work our way up...See More

true dat I agree. Is anyone else as torn as I am? On one side: I am an educator, I reach into the future with every child I teach, the kids need me, and I love what I do. On the other side: I am made to feel very guilty for saying "no", I'm expected to raise other people's kids, I have to be perky all the time, and I am not paid what I am worth at ALL. Is i...See More
