1) How would I get a traditional license to teach? Usually lateral entry teachers have a degree related to education. In my case, I will have an education degree, I will have completed an internship, and I will have taken all of the courses necessary to get a license (minus student teaching). When I get my lateral entry license, what will I need to do in order to get a traditional license?
2) Would lateral entry count towards my forgivable loan? I emailed the NCSEAA and they said lateral entry is not eligible for loan forgiveness, but I don't think the person understood that I am graduating with a degree in special education, which is the requirement within the FELS rules. I don't understand why I wouldn't qualify for loan forgiveness if I graduated with a special education degree and secured a qualified position?
I am trying to talk to the head of the department of education at my school, I'm just extremely stressed about this situation. I want to get my master's, and if I cannot qualify for loan forgiveness after I graduate, I will have to delay my graduation all together and become a fifth year student which will greatly impact my financial aid.
My wife is well established in our area with good, solid employment, so she and my daughter did not move with me. I rented an apartment there and commuted on the weekends.
Now, I find myself in a dilemma. I am currently 53 years old. I have subbed all these years. Have I missed the mark or do I continue pursuing my dream of teaching with only 4 years of fulltime teaching experience?
If you just can't stay in the classroom, could you see yourself...See MoreElementaryTeach2003, be sure you look at just how reduced your pension will be -- with your age, if you leave at 20 years, you're only going to get 50% of what you could get if you "max out" at 30 years. I'm not guessing at 50% -- I checked the chart. That's a huge reduction.
If you just can't stay in the classroom, could you see yourself taking on a different job in the system? For example, a teacher I work with just "stepped down" to become an EC assistant. How about school receptionist or working in the attendance office? It's just disappointing to put in 20 years and walk away with so little.
I moved to Raleigh so I could go into the lateral entry program. I've been subbing for a bit so I could get to know the area and schools. I been on the frontline portal and the only available jobs for me at the moment are schools I have been told are not that great. Can someone tell me if you had to choose, which is the batter of the two- West Cary MS or East Garner MS? Or if you had a choice of HS would it be Millbrook, Knightdale, Rolesville or Garner ?These schools are the ones hiring but I haven't' actually gone to any of them because too far from where I am renting to check out. Any help you can give would be appreciative. Thank you.
Going in as a full-fledged teacher (instead of lateral entry) will make it easier for you to find a job and will better prepare you for the job.
