I have 3 weeks off so I hope to get plenty of visits to the gym. Our dd and husband arrive from London next week so lots of entertaining here for one of those weeks.
Hopefully some of you can join me in the roll call during this very busy time of year
I've been walking this week,...See MoreMen, thanks for staying the course for us roll callers. The fickleness of the scales--we could all write a book with that title, couldn't we? How exciting that your "British" family will be able to be home for the holiday. Isn't it cool that at this point of life you want to spend time at the gym? You go, Girl!
I've been walking this week, despite the snow. The golf course has been lovely, lovely, lovely in the sun and snow. The slush from yesterday wasn't so lovely. Christmas shopping is helping my step count, too.
I just back from cycle class and that young lady had us moving. I cycled 19 miles today and there were a lot of mountains to climb. My son in law is going to class with me Friday. He told my daughter he was afraid I would out cycle him. Lol The guy rides his bike all over London to get to his clients and just about everywhere there and he thinks I can out ride him???!!! He just earned his black belt in Taekwando after working for it for years. I am impressed.
So with 3 weeks off I hope to get back to a three times a week during that time.
I took the he grands and some neighborkids to carol last night and we had such a great time. None had caroled before and I lucked out on the neighbors I had picked out to visit. I had tears in my eyes when I saw the one elderly gentleman with the very sick wife singing along with us. I thought no Carolers tend to sing at group places like nursing homes and these folks still living in their houses. We came here for cookies and cocoa and those kids devoured the entire platter in 45 minutes! The teen girls would put more whipped cream in the cups then cocoa. That's going to catch up with them someday, won't it, roll callers?
The joy of brightening others' lives, bearing each other's burden, easing others' loads and supplanting empty hearts and lives with generous gifts becomes for us the magic of Christmas.
I am so DAMN sick of hearing about how I just don't understand because I'm young, white, and rich. Being disrespected all day every day by my students because their parents have told them they don't have to listen to the white teacher. Searching for advice and getting headlines like "What White Teachers Are Getting Wrong in Urban Schools" and "White Teachers Fail At Reaching Black Students" There's the problem, right there. I am white, so automatically I must be clueless. Race SHOULDN'T play any part in my classroom environment, yet it is the single downfall of the entire setup.
I work my tail off coming up with fun lessons, new ways to present the material, strategies to reach every child in that room. I teach children with visual impairments, with Autism, with learning disabilities.
It's not just kids and their parents. It's the whole community. How can I be expected to reach these kids when even other teachers look down on me, simply for being white? That I can't control the child that tried to trip me (6 months pregnant at the time)?
Let's not forget the blatant disregard for religion. No church on Holy Days of Obligation (Catholic School I'm talking about here) and no hint of Catholicism. But come hell or high water we'll have off on MLK day and don't even think about skipping the Black Pride Prayer Service.
The principal is racist, period. She didn't even want to hire me, but I was the only person who interviewed. Anyone else needs to leave early, come late, what have you, it's fine. But my 4 month old runs a 101 fever and I need to take her to the doctor? You better believe I'll be dealing with the aftermath for weeks. My sister attempted suicide and I need a day off? Huge attitude and wholly inconsiderate answer of "Well I don't know what I'm going to do with your class." It's your damn job to know what to do. If you don't, GTFO you're not principal material.
And straight up being told I don't know how to teach black children? They're children. Their race does not affect their cognitive abilities.
NovelLeave. In that kind of toxic environment, some little thing will go wrong and you will live with the aftermath for a long long time. Go somewhere you will be appreciated and fulfilled. Race is not the whole issue here...it is the lack of support from senior management and the students' families.
Bob R/CAYou seem to be excessively focused on race, and your words reveal not-so-subtle biases. Have you considered they might be noticing something you're not aware of? I don't think that environment is right for you.
A very brief history: A recent bout with lung cancer accompanied by a diagnosis of COPD. Ahhh the joys of smoking a pack a day for nearly forty years. Research into the physical effects of COPD led to the thought that I'd like to have known this stuff before I started using tobacco. That in turned sparked some ideas about enlarged props and group participation instruments as a fun way to educate and encourage curiosity about the health sciences. Any thoughts?
The Eshelman Institute and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2018 Young Innovators Program!
What is the Young Innovators Program?
The Young Innovators Program is an eight-week paid summer internship for high school students offered by the Eshelman Institute for Innovation and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Interns work side-by-side with faculty on cutting-edge and innovative research in an immersive laboratory environment. Interns may work on developing new therapies to cure cancer, designing a virtual patient to enhance the education of health professionals, using 3D printing technology to deliver drugs that prevent the transmission of HIV, and so much more.
Why the Young Innovators Program?
Beyond getting paid to gain hands-on laboratory and research experience, interns participate in various team building, career development and interdisciplinary activities. Interns will tour innovative spaces like Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies and BeAM Makerspaces, participate in roundtable discussions with STEM professionals and explore the many academic and research opportunities available at UNC Chapel Hill.
My name is David Emery. I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California and a soon-to-be teacher myself (middle school). As part of the doctoral work for my dissertation, I am conducting a study to explore work trends (specifically the non-instructional workload) among teachers and former teachers. You are invited to participate in the study. If you agree to participate, you will complete a survey that should take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey as a thanks, you have the opportunity to be entered into a raffle for one of a dozen $25 gift cards (Starbucks or Amazon.com, your choice).
Participation in the study is voluntary. Your name and any other potentially identifiable information will not be linked to your response. Your relationship with you institution will not be affected by your participation in this study. The focus is on your experiences with work tasks and not on your work-site specifically.
