I'd use a risk-benefit analysis - what do you hope to get out of that? What could happen to you if you push it and it comes back on you? I don't see a lot of upside in this scenario for you.

This might sound cynical, but it happens all the time. They aren't worried because they know the teacher personality is generally such that you will kill yourself to get ready and make it work no matter how late they hire you. All the stress is on the eventual hire, and none of it really is on them.
