Implementation:
· Teacher will gather children onto the carpet
· Teacher will go over good listening behaviors such as quiet mouths, hands in lap, raising hands
· Teacher will begin to read Mix It Up! As story permits, the teacher will invite students to come up to interact with the book
· Teacher will call on students to make predictions about what might happen in the story
· Teacher will discuss which colors each primary colors make when they are mixed
· Teacher will explain to students that they are going to be investigators to make sure that this book is telling us the truth about these colors
· Teacher will explain to students that a prediction is when you use what you already know to make a good guess of what you think will happen
· Teacher will tell students that they will each be separated into 3 groups and each groups job is to prove that our predictions are correct
· Teacher will write "Our Predictions" at the top of a piece of paper
· Teacher will write "Red + Yellow =" on the paper and call on a student for the answer
o Repeat with "Yellow + Blue =" and "Red + Blue ="
o Teacher will refer to story as necessary to find answers.
· Teacher will randomly distribute 1 pompom to each student. Students that have the same colored pompoms will be in 1 group.
· Teacher will explain that these pompoms are also their ticket for a treat after our experiment. If students are misbehaving, they will lose their pompom (briefly discuss inappropriate behaviors). The students that still have their pompoms at the end of the experiment will get a prize.
· Teacher will call students with specific color pompoms to each space
· Teacher will hand out one plastic baggie to each student (corresponding to which color group they are in)
· Teacher will model squishing, rolling, patting bag to mix colors.
· Students in each group will now start mixing their baggies up.
· Teacher will walk around room, discussing with groups what they see and if they think their prediction will be correct.
· After all groups are finished, students will gather on rug with their groups and baggies
· The teacher will point to each prediction on the paper and ask the specific group if our prediction was correct and put a check mark if so.

Baggies break for one. Baggies make really cool bean bags to throw at a pal. Those kinds of things.
Preschoolers are into the process of exploring the activity. Rewards and bribes shouldn't be involved at all(the part about the pompous) Make a dot in the back of a child's hand with washable marker instead to designate groups. Adding the pompons only adds to "exploring" away from your lesson.
I would incorporate music in as many ways as possible. Children listen well to information and directions used in little catchy tunes and songs. Make them up to fit your need to familiar tunes. Use them to regain wandering attention. Have them to fill in any extra time you might have left.
The important thing is to have a sense of fun about you. If you are having fun, the children want to, too. I always liked to keep things simple when working with this age of child. For instance, I probably wouldn't do the chart thing or if I did, it would be later. I never expected children to sit in a large group for more then 10 minutes. Children learn best when they are moving so I would incorporate movement in large group activities as much as possible.
So, I would simplify the lesson and incorporate more active and less messy activities for a demo lesson when I would probably be on the nervous side.
Anyone interested? It's a yearlong commitment: begins in either late September or Early October and ends in the spring. Teachers rotate travel buddies every 4-6 weeks (depends upon the number of participants). Some participants have been in the exchange for up to 8 years so we are a reliable group!
sta2millerWe use white wide paper. We also use the composition books intended for the lower grades. Usually called something like Primary Notebooks. dotted line with space on the top to draw a picture - marbled cover on outside.
Everyone must be getting busy with school starting soon. Ours start next week. I am going to start doing some consulting on line when they head back to school.
My exercise time has been cut back, so I have been trying to put more effort in the time I do spend on it. Today I spent time at the one room school. 75 people came through. It was warm and I did miss the outside time, getting in some walking. enjoyed visiting with the people. One young couple were visiting from Paris!
WW was good news on Friday. down 1.8# ! Finally a drop!
Hope everybody is enjoying some beautiful summer weather before the start of school. Keep movin" and groovin"!! :)
Bev, you really have good attendance at your school exhibit--75 seems like a grand number. Your effort-ful exercise is paying off.
5,126 steps today and 45 minutes of yoga. I spent most of the day polishing off a Power Point presentation for our Habitat auction on Friday. I couldn't figure out how to randomize the photos, so I googled and then generated a random list of numbers from 1-200 and then renamed each photo. It didn't take very long, and it did just what I wanted it to do. Tell me again, were we paralyzed by our lack of information prior to Google? Or, perhaps, we're paralyzed now by its overload.
I will use you both for a higher steppin, tomorrow! :)
