Bob R/CAThe site is transitioning to a different format, which requires users to login to reply. I'll have the final version of it finished in the next 24 or 48 hours, and hopefully the new format will allow better engagement for discussions.
Deann MarinSo sad that this is true. Kids are the ines wh suffer. As an educator, I've seen this situation far too often. So many times I've said to kids, its not your fault, your dad or mom has problems that have nothing to do with you.
I have just joined, I am about to take on my first class of my own halfway through a school year. Looking for any words of advice as far as what to do when the class is already essentially created. Do I try to find out what the previous teacher did or just walk in and do it my own way?
The fourth grader's transition period occurred only months before the end of the school year. I am not sure how much of a communication between the two happened behind the scenes, but he met the new teacher the first day she took over. The basic routine remained the same, but thank goodness, she made the class her own and didn't try to be anything like the first one. She was able to recognize the students" positives and brought out some joy in learning and enthusiasm for school just in the few months she was guiding the classroom. We were so happy with how she made such a difference for our child, that we both sent her a glowing letter of appreciation for her skills and attitude. We were impressed at how quickly he made a turn around with the second teacher after all those months of just going through the motions of being in class.
I would think the age of the students would determine how much or even if needed time be spent trying to ease the transition. I would also think that I would start with a similar routine they are used to and then gradually make the changes needed. The only time I would make a drastic change from the beginning was if you are inheriting a classroom where changes in discipline and classroom management were necessary due to really bad behavior.
I did my training group ride this am which was a big jump from what we have been doing. If it hadn't been overcast with wind, I don't know if I could have finished the ride. Being part of the group is the ONLY reason I kept plugging away at those 12 miles. Next week we are doing the exact route without today's stopping halfway for a break. I had to stop three times and I WAS last along with the "sweep" the person who brings up the back for those folks like me.
My legs and bottom do ok but my arms get wobbly the last half. I also can not seem to quench my thirst on these rides. I drank three 24 oz bottles of water Justin the ride. I might look into those replenishment drinks to see if that helps on the wobbly arms. I suspect this might be an electrolyte problem.
Taking the two youngest tonight to a parent night out camp at the zoo. If the storms don't arrive til later, I hope to go to the big festival tonight for the arts.
Keep movin', everybody! I know I can't right now. Lol
judycaretI did my 10,000 steps early (big icky heat wave starting today) and then went to the grocery store. Too bad standing in line isn't a calorie burner.
But i studied philosophy in university and have decided, after long quarrels with the deepest reccesses of my mind, to become a highschool english teacher.
(The most meaingful moments of my life are when i am connecting to someone deeply by bringing them to a more clear reality and passing on my fervent passion and insatisble curiosity for life. I know this isnt the whole job for english teachers but if incsn do this for a living some of the time and have a seminal effect on students, i will be fulfilled. )
I have been doing resesech but dont want to reinvent the wheel. One mentor can replace years worth of research and reading.
Some questions i have are:
Is anyone willing to message me and possibly skype so i can ask more in-depth questions?
Should i get a masters or just a ATP teachers cert? (I have a bachelor's in philosophy and plan to teach highschool english and eventually college level.)
What is it really like?
How is the job market now? Do they prefer certs ovee masters vecause of salary or do they like seeing the higher education degree. (I will most likely be teaching in new york.)
What are some helpful and Illuminating tips that you wish you knew when you were in my position?
Im sure i have more questions but they havent come up here yet.
I think you all for taking your time to read this.
men52Funny about the day of the week error! I guess being retired I don't keep track of of what day it that much anymore. If it's not on the calendar that we have something we have to do, it really doesn't matter to me anymore.
I have been reading posts on here for a while. I am hoping that it is true about your account is inactive, because I just got an email saying my account was marked inactive. Referred for 4, one interview and another scheduled. I hope the tentative offer comes soon. So much to do.
