There is this one Pitbull song we really push through and she has us calling out to the words in the song "anybody. Somebody. everybody let's go!" We are working but those little additions helps make the work fun.
JRod your workouts sound tough. I hope you find the right combination of what works for you but keeps the motivation going.
I was curious if anyone here on the ROLL CALL uses that Silver Sneaker program through Medicare that pays towards gym membership? I was wondering how that works.
I started by walking/jogging outside. It was much cooler today (59F) with a headwind on part of the path. I decided to increase the jogging portion. I made the decision to walk the concrete portions and jog the crushed granite portions. Now, my jogging at this point is really not much faster than my brisk walk, but I feel like I get a better workout. I completed 2.5 miles in 43 minutes with a 3.37 average pace. My goal for this is to get back to 5K (3.1 miles) in 40 minutes.
After the outside workout, I changed into my swimsuit and prayed that the water was a bit warmer than Tuesday--especially since it was much cooler today. Luckily, it did feel nice and warm.
For the water exercise, I jogged forward from end to the other and back. I switched to side shuffle starting with my right leg. Next, I jogged backwards and finally did the side shuffle starting with my left leg. I cycled through these four for about 35 minutes.
Tomorrow is trainer day and I hope I can get through whatever she has planned.
I'm new here! I'm currently a third year student doing my undergraduate here in Canada. I had wanted to become a sociology professor for a very long time. However, recently I realized that I really would just like to teach high school as teaching is something I love doing. But, doing my PhD in sociology wasn't just something I wanted to do to become a professor, I also wanted to do it because I simply love the subject and have always wanted to achieve the accomplishment of receiving my Doctorate degree in the subject :) Plus, i'll get to spend a few years researching something of interest to me.
So heres the thing, if I become a teacher (by going to the local teachers college in my hometown) and hopefully finding a job at some point, could I still do my PhD in sociology? Perhaps while I'm working as a substitute teacher before I get a full time job I could begin it? I'm not sure what would be the best way to approach it, but I really want to do both: be a teacher and earn my doctorate.
The benefit for me would be that my hometown has both a teachers college, 2 of the largest high schools in the province, and a university that I love that offers a Masters and PhD in the area of sociology that I am most passionate about.
Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about approaching these goals of mine?
Probably 63, but it could be sooner, depending on several different factors.
> 2. How many years of teaching did you or will you have at > retirement?
25, I think.
> 3. Will you get a pension, social security, or both?
Pension for sure. Due to that ridiculous act of law, I will only be able to collect a pittance in the social security factor. I put in well over 40 quarters in other jobs, but that law makes me collect only 40&37; of what I should get.
> 4. What are your plans for retirement?
Make it to retirement first.
Then move out of this state, to another state. I will probably substitute teach in that state periodically. Mostly, though, hubby and I want to enjoy our grandchildren, do some traveling (we may pick up an RV), and just enjoy life.
Round 1 --walking lunges with a 12.5 lbs weighted bar across studio and back --chest press with 12.5 lbs weighted bar (used 18 for second round) 15 reps --standing, twisting row with 12.5 lbs weighted bar 15 reps --standing deadlift with 18 lb weight bar 15 reps --side squat shuffle across studio and back Repeated this circuit twice.
Round 2 (using bench) --seated goblet squats with 20 lbs barbell 15 reps --inclined push up and the step up onto bench 15 reps --standing fly with 7.5 lbs dumbbells (dropped to 5 lbs second round) 15 reps ---cable machine (not sure of weight, maybe 20 lbs) squat position and then pull for 15 reps --bench side to side jumps 20 reps --plank hold and jumping jacks 20 reps Repeated this twice.
From here, it was off to do the 20 minute stretching (my favorite part).
My descriptions are not the best because I forgot to ask for the actual names.
I managed to get through most of the exercises with little problem except the bench jumping. I was supposed to jump OVER the end while my hands were on the bench, but my brain would not allow my feet to leave the floor. She modified this by just having me jump side to side and not over.
Tomorrow is cardio day so I will have to dress for the lower temps (60F) with wind. Still not cold enough to face those dreaded machines. '
Has anyone heard of transfers being placed yet? How long before we find out I'd we were placed or not? If we have heard should we assume we didn't make it this year?
Judy2/CAAre you referring to DOD schools? There is a separate for those teachers.

Stopped at the store to buy my favorite salad ingredients - baby spinach, red bell pepper, cucumber, carrots and a little container of French dressing from the pizza shop there. It made for a tasty lunch change from the norm.
Getting colder by the weekend but not miserable. Have one more spinning class to attack this week. I think twice a week is enough for me so I don't get burned out before I can really see some results. I have noticed that the lung burn I had been coping with when exercising for several months has finally gone completely. It usually took about 30 minutes of hard exercise before it went away. Glad that ache is no longer part of the routine.
Looking forward to reading JRod's experience today
So, since it was a...See MoreI remember the lung burn when I was just starting out in my running days. Oh how I wanted to quit! Good job, men!
Well, today I did some self talk in the car to get on the cardio machines. As soon as I entered the gym, I felt the overwhelming dread of the boredom those machines induce. I just couldn't face them!
So, since it was a beautiful day, 81* and sunny. I drop my swim gear in the locker, put on my cap and headed outside. I walked, with some very slow jogging, for 2.5 miles. It felt so good to move!
Back in the gym, I headed to the locker room and got into my swimsuit for the water jogging. I did forward jogging, backward jogging and the side lunge running. After 30 minutes, I was done. Water was a bit chillier than last week, but tolerable.
Tomorrow is trainer day and I hope it's a good routine. She did say that each time we met, it would be different.
JRod, way to mix it up. 81F and sunshine--being outside is good for the soul.
Babs, enjoy that Florida golfing/exercising weather while you can. Glad the blister is doing better.
Judy, I chuckled about your Trivia/Truvia spelling. You walked in the shopping center without shopping? Or, are you a secret shopper? :)
Bev, I admire your determination. You've been here a long time and are even keeping on keeping on with your added responsibilities now.
Kathy, good use of the gym. You can really vary your efforts there, can't you?
Ron, I love how faithful you are in your reporting.
We're back from two weeks on the road after 10 days of holiday company. We spent a week in Florida. We kayaked, did a boat tour of the Amelia Island area, biked, and visited Cumberland Island National Park. (Those Carnegies had the money--oooohhhh eeeeee. An indoor pool in the early 1900's--emptied and refilled after each use. And 300 people employed to keep their lifestyle going. Wow.) Beautiful island: no paved roads, feral horses, lots of history.
Then we did an 8 day cruise. I walked on all 4 sea days, but not so much on the port days. Riding on a tour bus is informative, but not conducive for burning off all that buffet food.
Today, I'm on my game. 45 minutes of yoga and 16,913 steps. Call it make-up exercise after a long spell of irregular efforts.
Heard Dick Van Dyke talking about her on BBC Radio this morning. He sounded so affectionate and proud of her. It was lovely.
