I'm interested that they can put you in a teaching position which is not on your application. Does that mean you can teach something you are not qualified to teach? Or am I reading that incorrectly.
hahaIt is the catch-22 of having a lot of certs. It may help you get hired, or not get excessed, or get placed if you do get excessed, BUT you may be forced to teach something you do not want to or are not particularly ready for (and once it's on your DoDEA certificate it's very difficult to get it removed).
Haha and anyone else with an opinion. What do think are the chances of an actual RIF occurring? I am worried about being excessed just because of being the last man in so to speak. It must be pins and needles everywhere for new hires from CONUS and local hires. What is the vibe out there?
If there are not viable volunteers then the admin will look at dept.'s, SCD's, etc.and make a decision who/what areas the school can afford to lose. So, someone who is newer may not go first, depending on their dept., needs of the school, etc.
Now, that also may change depending on who/how many people apply for VERA/VSIP (and actually accept it if offered). The deadline for that is not until Feb. 1, so we may not really know the deal with how many people truly need to be excessed until those numbers are finalized
It honestly does not look good for local hires who have not been converted to permanent and NTE's. They are likely to be phased out to make room for excess teachers from other schools. Some may end up being hired back after the dust has settled and some may end up not getting excessed, but it's very up in the air right now for many people.
Looks like March(ish) before people will start to know where they are going. Also looks a little daunting with the timeline laid out like that and RIF listed as one of the options if they cannot place everyone (but the union is saying they are cautiously optimistic it won't come to that).
Keep on it. Call at least once a week until they get tired of hearing from you. You might try calling/writing to a supervisor (it worked for me). Patty Lesjak-Davis used to be an HR supervisor. It might be worth an email and/or a call to her.
WaitingOnDoDEAOk, yes in Texas we can do that. However, I don't think I have enough college credit where it would be worth it for me. Thanks for the info. That clears it up a lot.
hahaInteresting. ESL combined with any of those other fields would be a good combo. SPED is always useful to get a job (with DoDEA, in the US, int'l schools around the world, etc.).
I've read that over 300+ jobs are being eliminated with DODD. That is certainly not positive! I'm curious on a few things related to that.
1. It seems like a huge number. Proportionately, is this a huge percentage of the DOD teacher workforce?
2. Does this primarily affect only teachers? Admin? Support staff? No idea?
3. In my mind, when a school district eliminates position, they do not then hire new people. Is this correct in this case?
4. I saw, I think, that is mostly relating to high schools. If I'm hoping for a position at a high school, should I not get my hopes up, realistically?
There are around 8700 teachers worldwide, including the Americas, so it's not a huge percentage, but when those teachers need to be placed, and the number of new hires is generally LESS than 300 every year, it does make it seem like it is not the best year to be hired from stateside.
That being said, with the incentives being offered for people to retire/separate early, I would think that there will still be some hiring, although that could just be me being a hopeless optimist.
As for DoDEA in general, yes, there are some issues that we are working through right now but also bear in mind that the article was written by the union so it is being painted as fairly gloomy (the issue of taxes is still unsettled but looking like it will not be as bad as feared, PD is the LEAST of my concerns, etc.). Things could keep sliding in the wrong direction but it is still a great gig for many and we don't plan on leaving anytime soon.
Anyone have the latest phone number contacts for HR in DC? Used this one 571.372.0576, but got a disconnected number recording. Or are they effected by shutdown? TIA.
I've read as much as I could on here about the DODD process, and I finally decided to create an account and just put it out there!
I would really, really love to get a placement with the DoDea. It's been a dream of mine to teach abroad, and the DoDea seems to have the best of both worlds- adventure and the security of having visas and housing.
So, here's a bit about me. I'd love to know what your thoughts on of the possibility of me getting hired, or what else I should work towards to add to my resume. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
I am in my 4th year teaching. I teach an exploratory World Cultures class (a little bit of French, German, and Spanish) and 4 sections of French. I am also certified to teach 5-12 English/Language Arts. I am working towards my Masters degree and ESL state of Iowa endorsement. I am receiving AP French training this summer. I'm a mentor teacher in my district, and stay active in the school (French club, leadership group sponsor, foreign exchange student group sponsor, etc.) In the summers I work with high school students in France in a study abroad setting.
I've had two interviews in the past two years (sooooo hard when those don't pan out!) with DoDea schools. I think that this is definitely a positive, as I know that even interviews are hard to come by!
Any advice? Any insight into what this year will bring as far as hiring? Thanks, again!
IcanreadATeacher, where do you work that your pay is higher than DoDEA? I'm always curious of well-paying states/districts in case we end up back in the US.
I agree with Haha - the LQA and PA make a big difference. And hopefully in time, we will purchase a house and have our mortgage paid for with our LQA.
