In my experience working for EDIS across Navy, AF, and Army programs, there has been a vast difference between each branch and their culture/management style. Is the same true for DoDEA stateside programs? Are the Army schools pretty top-down and micromanaged in their management approach and AF schools more laissez-faire?
JJJ123My experience suggests that as a whole, DoDEA is more like the Army in its management style. Stiff, micromanagey, more worried about titles and protocol, and how we've always done it. Just my two cents...
I would like to apply for the 2022-2023 school year but it only gives me the option to apply for 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022. When do they allow you to submit an application for the upcoming school year? Should I submit as 2021-2022 with my available start date or do I wait for the system to select the 2022-2023 school year?
MullinzoI believe that in March, the option to apply for 2022/2023 will open up as that is when all applicants are asked to renew their application for the year.
hahaIn general, it seems better to get your application submitted and your qualifications (hopefully) determined as soon as possible. Then you are ready to review and finalize for the upcoming year.
My Diplomatic (maroon) Passport application in WASHDC today. Any group information on how the transfer works from US Dept of Agriculture US Forest Service Teacher to DoDEA Teacher Japan?. US OPM says the process is seamless and I will not lose any duty days between the two positions.
If you're working for the USDA in Washington DC until 4,00pm on Tuesday, and then you start working for the DEA in Baltimore at 8.00am on Wednesday, then yes, the OPM is correct, and you will not lose any duty days.
But the real world doesn't work like that.
Your first duty day in DoDEA won't be until AFTER you hit the ground in Japan. For example if your plane arrives in Japan on Saturday, then your first duty day (and first actual paid day of employment) would probably be the following Monday.
The question that only you and/or the Forest Service can answer is when is your last duty day in the Forestry Service? (I don't think the FS will count you flying economy over the Pacific as a duty day.)
Once you know your last duty day in the FS, and your first duty in DoDEA, then a quick glance at the calendar can tell you how many "in-between days" you will have.
These are not lost duty days, because you were not at work, so nothing got lost. They were just "in-between days" for which you earned no salary. (Ouch.)
There may be a possible loophole. The FS may allow you to burn leave days on your way out the door. This may minimize the pain of "in-between days".
I'm interested in how you are counting the days. Will it be seamless? Or will there be a bunch of in-between days?
Hi all. I teach at Ankara EHS. Anyone know if DoDEA teachers get that 2.7% raise for federal employees? I'm assuming we do but I can't find confirmation anywhere. Cheers.
Hello all. My wife recently received a conditional offer and we're going through the process now, yay! I did however come across the so-called "5 year rule" for DoD employees, and I had never heard that before. Is it really hard to stay at your school past 5 years?
As far as I know, DoDEA teachers have never been subject to the 5 year rule. We have the opposite problem in that it is very difficult to NOT stay at your school, should you wish a change of scenery.
IsItFriday? The 5 year rule does not apply to DoDEA teachers.
And while the conditional offer may refer to a one year tour or a two year tour, DoDEA teachers do not have tours or a DEROS, and currently there is no process in place for transferring to another location.
You should plan on staying in that location for ten years.
If you have to leave your current teaching job and PCS with your partner, is it called "quitting" or just "leave without pay?" How does the "leave without pay" work actually? Is it like you are still under the HR radar, or it does not really help with hiring process? Thanks?
hahaNot sure about all of the details. You can resign, or you can request LWOP. There are supposed to be some benefits to going LWOP as far as being rehirable, but I don't really know the logistics of it.
You don't need anyone's permission to quit. (See TikTok for videos on how to quit in style.)
Local hires often take LWOP when their spouse makes a PCS. It's not super useful in these situations. I think of it more as a lottery ticket. It may turn out to be useful in the 12 months if the spouse gets new orders, or if the spouse's employment status changes.
But after 12 months the lottery ticket expires and loses it's value.
Wondering if anyone has heard anything about the transfer round in 2022? It would be nice to have one... I heard that local hires (e.g. hired in Korea) can no longer pick up LQA after they move to a new installation. (e.g. move from Korea to UK) unless they are excessed. Is that right? Thanks!
The old established transfer program was clear, open and transparent.
It wasn't perfect, but it had agreed-upon rules that were negotiated with the union, and the teachers knew the rules of the game, and teachers could attempt to plan their career based on those rules.. And the rules for that process gave consideration to things such as type of location (hardship), time at location, seniority, and teaching certs.
It seems wrong to use the term "Transfer Program" now.
What exists now is a top down process which doesn't involve the union or the majority of the teachers.
How is that different from a management directed transfer? It's not, right?
I received an interview request for Naples. Can anyone tell me about the area or if it is a good post to have? How is housing and crime? Any information would be appreciated.
IcanreadFor what it's worth, I was just talking to a coworker today who is a young, single woman and was strongly advised by multiple people to not accept an offer that she received for Naples, due to crime there.
I don't have any personal experience with Italy and only know what I've read online.
...See MoreReceived my first DoDEA job offer from USAJOBS.GOV site. Suspected fraud because the subject line read [Non-DoD Source] Tentative Job Offer for TEACHER (MIXED SECONDARY0, TP-1701-CG, Iwakuni, Japan
The job offer is from US Army,- not from DoDEA EAS. I completed US Army forms for this DoDEA position on a US Army Airbase in Japan..
I am an US Forest Service Teacher on an US Job Corps Center with two government email accounts. The US Army personnel contacting me have ARMY.MIL and DoDEA.EDU email accounts.. Transferring between these jobs will be seamless without loss of duty days or federal leave earnings.
Conclusion: Persons seeking DoDEA jobs should also have an application active on USAJOBS. In the end, I will be both US Army and DoDEA.
Has anyone ever heard of a teacher's spouse getting a work visa in an overseas location while the teacher works with DODEA? There is a possibility that this would be the only way the spouse could earn an income, if there was no position available on base. I wasn't sure what the rules are for a spouse as far as earning an income overseas. Thanks!
There are no Army schools. The schools are DoDEA schools on Army bases, and DoDEA schools on Air Force bases.
But neither the Army or the Air Force has much influence on the schools, beyond demographics, and local issues.
The schools serve the military obviously, but the schools do not...See More
