As for lesson ideas that do not include direct instruction, there are a lot of good materials out there. Have a look at Teachers Pay Teachers if you are not finding anything free.
You could split them into groups and assign each group to represent a country involved in the war. They could research conditions and history of their country prior to the war and report back to the class, leading them to come up with their ideas for the causes and contributing factors.
Videos and movies are good but try and have video review sheets, cloze type activities, purposes for viewing and information that needs to be noted/completed. You can use these to generate group discussions, set up debates, pro-cons, etc.
I'm currently enrolled in a teaching program to become certified in EC-6. I used to teach preschool for 13 years, but this is a whole different ballgame. I'm just looking for teachers that I can chat with about their experiences and possibly give some advice.

Just wondered if there were any other introverted trainee teachers around? Doing secondary school - love it, just dislike feeling like I'm being judged because I don't want to spend my every break (on placement) surrounded by tonnes of people.

It teaches students that when they grow up, everything will be negotiable, and they will take no responsibility for their actions or work. (You may find some of the examples in the article silly and funny, but they are all actual "deals" that have been observed in classrooms.)
