This spring break, however, feels different as I begin to contemplate my future. Here's a little bit about my background. After finishing my master's in English, I decided to become a certified secondary teacher. After student-teaching for a semester, I became a full-time substitute for two years, including a period of several months when I became the teacher of record following an emergency. Although I was content with piecing together my teaching portfolio, an amazing opportunity fell upon me that I couldn't pass up as I was granted funding and a fellowship to pursue a PhD in Digital Humanities. The beauty of this program is that I have become proficient in philosophy, online instruction, language arts, critical theory, rhetoric, video game studies, computer/software coding, and even experimental design as I have drawn from a plethora of interdisciplinary fields. Additionally, I was able to continue my career as an educator as I have amassed four years of teaching experience at the university level. I'm currently putting together my dissertation and plan on defending next spring.
This brings me to my inquiry about DODEA. Although becoming a tenure-track professor is the dream of many, I am not entirely certain that academia is for me. Research and teaching are both rewarding, but the nebulous job outlook gives me pause. To be certain, DODEA isn't completely alien to me as eight years of my life were spent in Asia, so I am the product of a DODDS education. Based on my background, what would be my strengths and potential limitations if I were to submit an application and my CV? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks for your time!
If I am reading your summary correctly you basically have zero years of full time K-12 teaching experience. So, if DoDDS is your dream I would try and drop back down to the secondary level and get a couple of years of teaching experience there.
You also need to look through your transcripts and figure out how they match up with DoDDS teaching requirements. English is a fine area of certification but to be competitive you really need to try and maximize the areas DoDDS will consider you for. If you have or can add state certification in an area then you would only need half of the normally required credit hours.
If you can get an idea of areas you might be DoDDS qualified in you can go ahead and submit your application/transcripts and note possible areas you wish DoDDS to consider you for. Eventually they will review your application and tell you what they consider you qualified for. Sometimes they will also tell what classes or credits you are short in for each area. The EAS online application asks you to enter all education and work experience directly and does not have a space for a CV etc.
TL:DR: Get relevant K-12 classroom experience. Maximize certification areas.
Does anyone know if/how many middle & high school social studies and/or history vacancies there are? I'm open for any location so any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ours is 25% and that would seem like 25% of your $65K salary would be $650 a paycheck but the way it is calculated means it would likely be much less than that ($200-300 a paycheck). Still a nice addition to your salary but not 25%.
I just don't want people to assume that their salary would be something that it's not.
Does anyone know how much time DDESS gives new hires to relocate? Especially if you are moving from another state? Will they offer temporary housing on base until you can find something off base? I know they do not pay for relocation, but how flexible are they about moving?
infiniti4Thank you for answering that Expat, but HR asked me when I could start. I thought they would give me the start date like you said...What would be an appropriate amount of time to request given that I am moving from another state and my principal at least wants me to put in a two week notice?
EuxpatI came in at the beginning of a school year and had a report date on my orders. Sounds like yours is different with the school year well under way? I would take whatever time you need to leave your job with proper notice, move and find/set-up your house etc. You could also call your new principal and ask for guidance on this issue.
Is there something I should do to have those looked at? I assume that I won't be considered for those areas if I haven't been reevaluated... is that correct?
I ❤ spedI have been told by HR more than once if you are pending in a category your name would show on a referral list. If there is interest in you the admin can request HR evaluate it.
I've received 4 referrals (all from Japan) in the last 24 hours, but no interview requests. It's possible I won't get an interview. But I'm wondering if the interview requests will come AFTER the in district transfer? Does Korea have an in district transfer? What about parts of Europe?
