My question is: if we real...See MoreHi all. My wife and I really want to be in the DOD. She's home with the young girls right now, so it will just be me applying. This is really the only year I can do it. We've had to move a lot since we got married 6 years ago. So if I don't get in this year, we'll have to find some place to settle down for good.
My question is: if we really want to be on the east coast (NC, VA, or NY), should I apply everywhere around the world, just to get in, and then hopefully transfer to the post we really want in 3-5 years? Or should we just list the stateside places we'd like to live? We're both ok with going overseas...but we don't want to do that for 3-5 years and have to go back to a regular school system. I need to start thinking about my pension...
hahaThe general consensus is that it's harder to get into DoDEA overseas than DoDEA stateside. By all means put down whatever you like but only if you would be really interested in going overseas for a while. Overseas DoDEA is a great gig in many, many ways but it's not for everyone.
Has anyone added target jobs just because they have the credits?... or only added just the ones that they really want to teach? Just wondering if others keep away from subjects they are not too comfortable with, even though they have the credits.
hahaIf one is willing to potentially teach anything on their certification to get a foot in the door then it is a perfectly fine plan. The only caveat being that you should be prepared to teach it and do at least a decent job of it since you would be on two years of probation (during which time you can be released without cause).
In the past, for new teachers starting in the fall, when have your travel orders been for? How much time have you had to get settled before the school year started? Have your traveled in August, or has anyone had orders to travel in July? Thanks.

We prefer to get to a new post early to get as much as we can taken care of before we have to start reporting. For our last move between posts we came in early July.
You generally get 60 days of temporary housing on the way in to a new posting (it must be approved and deemed reasonable but it usually is). You can also apply for more if you are having legitimate problems finding permanent housing although ideally you would love to be in your new house before school starts.
FrankThanks for your reply. So it sounds like they give you some choice in when you'd like to travel, within 30-45 or so days of starting, so you can find housing and so on. That's great to hear.
Is it possible to submit two different re-assignment requests? Could both be approved and then you choose which one you'd like, or are you obligated to accept the first request that is approved? Is it possible for the Current principal to refuse to sign the request?
hahaI didn't really look at the form to apply for re-assignment but I would doubt that the powers would be would set it up so that a teacher is able to just pick from multiple assignments.
I do know that principals on both sides of the transfer must agree to the re-assignment. I don't know if they have to justify a decision to not approve it.
Wow. Hot off the press. They just emailed a list of 80+ openings for the fall across the Japan district. Some very interesting openings and combinations. :D
Current in district DoDDS teachers will get first option for these (basically a quasi mini-transfer round) but that will leave similar size holes in other district schools.
angelWhere can you take the methods courses for elementary? I have an elementary cert but not the classes. I've done a search but can't really find anything.
I don;t have any information about Europe. When we were in Europe we would be asked if we were interested in a possible in district or in complex move but I never recall seeing an actual list of openings. Those were also big closing years so there were a lot of excess teachers to place.
For Math I see Gr 1-6/Math/Music, MS HS Math, Comp. Math, Math/Chinese/Physics, Math/Chem, HS Math, Gr 1-6/Math, HS math/ET, English/ Math and Math/ESL/LARS.
For Science I see MS/HS ESL/SCI (plus the two combined with Math etc above. For SS I see the ever popular Video/SS/AP Gov.. I don't see any Business.
SpedTeacher74Anywhere they will have me!! I just need a foot in the door. The only locations I left off my list were Turkey and Bahrain because my father told me he wouldn't let me leave if I were going to those places. So for his heart health I skipped those.
So far I've found some online courses, but wanted to see if anyone had tips for how to quickly earn needed credits. Has anyone used http://www.calcampus.edu/ to earn credits? Any other recommendations?
I'm so close to being qualified in this area any ideas would be appreciated!
http://ww...See MoreI'm no math teacher (although SPED teachers have to teach a little of everything) but wouldn't that be like an 8th of a credit? :S How does one earn fractions of credits?
If you are looking for fast credit then you probably want a self-paced course. OU has some but I don't claim to know the ins, outs and/or restrictions.
I have several questions such as whether I will have a possible person of contact in Atsugi (both before and after arrival), instructions about what happens when we arrive, etc., instructions about having our possessions picked up for transfer, etc.
My goodness, things are happening quickly now and we are on Cloud 9!
